Catholic Boy Scouts Substitute: Scouts Of St. George

I agree, i was just acknowledging it.

I think it's a great idea. It also provides a solution to maintaining truly Catholic units when the BSA allows practicing homosexual leaders.

I know you weren't dissing it, GM. I agree with you, too. I'm just surprised at some of the other posts that seem to disapprove. What's to disapprove of?

The idea irritates me, to be honest. Just adding more lines to the "Catholics hate gays" ditty.

But that's not the reason for the Scouts of St. George starting. Just because people will read it that way doesn't mean it's a bad idea. They merely want to provide an opportunity for Scouting with Catholicism at it's heart.

The Boy Scouts has been so watered down it's just sad. We didn't cook on campfires, we cooked with propane. We didn't do anything or learn anything. We would make tents and then sit around doing nothing. It was incredibly boring and I hated it. I bought a sheathed knife in protest to my scoutmaster's crusade against them, instead recommending two inch pocket knives that couldn't help you in the wild unless you wanted to whittle your way through the forest. He wasn't happy, but I stuck to my guns and I carried around a very accomplished smile when I walked around with a five inch knife strapped to my belt and all the other boy scout troops kept coming to me adoring it. Boys want to be men. They don't want to sit around learning how to survive, they want to practice how to survive, and that's something we were never allowed to do because it was deemed too dangerous. I have sad news for the leaders of the BSA: Accidents happen. You should do what you can to avoid them, within reason, without taking all of the fun for everyone because we might get our arms scraped by twigs.

How surprising? On the surface it sounds neat, but in reality, this is basically a reaction to the BSA allowing children who call themselves gay to join their club.

Think about the people who will therefore be motivated to join this Scouts of St. George. The founding impetus is for parents who don't like the thought of Johnny being friends with people who have SSA (because it's catching or something).

Throw in a few gender stereotypes and you've got a fine brew. Frogs legs are not any more "masculine" than tofu stew, in fact frogs legs is a very FRENCH dish... so unless they will be handing out berets to wear around the campfire, perhaps adjustments are in order.

Blah blah blah... it's all very Tradition Family Property-ish. There's nothing wrong with it but I think it ought to give all right thinking Christians the willies.

Agree.

So you don't think it's a "coincidence" that this is happening right after the BSA decided to okay gay kids into Scouts?

When camping, IMO the best combination of knives would be one larger one, like around six inches (or even longer, if you have use for it), obviously fixed blade, then a smaller folding knife, perhaps around three inches. There are several tasks better suited to smaller blades. Like making a feather stick.

Although even better would be a large fixed blade, a small fixed blade, then a folder.

Some people like to go ultra ultra light though, in which case probably a mid sized fixed blade is the way to go.

No, I don't. I said it was reactionary. And while I don't have a problem with the BSA's recent announcement, I can see where it's going. Eventually, practicing homosexual leaders will be allowed. When that happens, Catholic units will be the subject of lawsuits for not wanting homosexual leaders because they instead want to instill Catholic values.

When I eventually get married and have sons, I want them to be involved in Scouting, but I also want that Scouting experience to be shaped by Catholicism. And I don't want their Scout Leaders letting them think that living a homosexual lifestyle is morally acceptable.

If they decide to allow practicing homosexual leaders, I wonder if they'll allow single dads who are "involved" with women, or divorced dads with girlfriends/remarried?

Because honestly, I don't understand why so many Christians place "freak out" emphasis on practicing homosexuals when there's plenty of premarital and extramarital sex going on among heterosexuals.

Nice red herring. But I never said that I didn't have an issue with that either.

As an Eagle Scout, a lover of the Scouting movement, and as a Catholic convert, the whole concept of a strictly Catholic Scouting organization is great for any number of reasons. Why is it such a big deal if it had to come out of this particular one?

You're an Eagle Scout and a Catholic convert? You wouldn't happen to be Taylor Marshall, would you?

I'm not trying to debate or come off as a tricky jerk. These are just questions that've run through my mind and observations I've had.

Some of the reasoning in here seems to be: "We shouldn't be Catholic right now because it will give people the wrong idea about Catholics."

Who's reasoning that?
