Am I Weird?

The serenity before he faces death is amazing.  I wonder if he's praying for himself, for his nation, or those about to end his life, that they may one day repent and find forgiveness?  Hard to believe we're really not that far removed from the Christeros war.

Having heard this thought from my girlfriend for a number of years, I have come to respect such sentiments if one's situation has presented no other recourse but to be executed, but my belief in the good of rational people cant allow or approve of such an extreme position.

Certainly, while there might be glory in the momentary act of death, one must concede that in general, it is better for society and the advancement of Christianity for Christians to glorify God in a long life of service?

Unless the regime in America gets worse and starts executing Catholics, then I can see all of us dying very soon....I'll take an injection, I can't stand the sight of my blood...

Besides, I would be highly suspicious of the intentions those individuals who seek out martyrdom, concocting antagonistic fantasies in which their untimely deaths would result

I don't WISH to die as a martyr unless that's what God wants me to do. I really don't care how long I live. These thoughts I have have nothing to do with heroics or wanting to be thought of as courageous or brave.

As a dominican, I pray for martyrdom every morning, but that encompasses every sort of martyrdom, like, dealing with people who annoy me with patience, serving others to the point of sacrifice, letting others have the last word even when they are wrong...not standing up for myself over little trifles that don't amount to anything...in other words, the martyrdom of one's self will.

I would be crazy to pray for physical martyrdom..lol..(I seriously don't like the sight of my own blood...)

Haha I never thought of martyrdom like that. I learned in college that the term "Jihad" is closely related to those principles of one's inner struggle, so I should have drawn the connection, but you learn something new everyday :)

The other thing I find quite striking about that picture is that he was probably celebrating Mass when he was caught, hence the full vestments. I am sure he was afraid - most men would be - but what better time and place and manner to die?

I've always wondered if there was a reason I was so inspired by the saints who died at age 24 -- St. Therese, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, St. Kateri...if so, I turn 24 this year...hmmm
