Lilllabettt
Today was going to be a good day. 11:30 Mass, followed by a birthday party for my Grandma at 5. I was about to leave for 11:30 Mass when I got a phone call saying the party was cancelled, Grandpa doesn't feel well. So then I decided: "I'll go to the 5:30 Mass, that way I can run to the gym before." Fast forward an hour and I get another phone call saying the party is back on. Oh no. 11:30 Mass is already over. I am frantically looking for a parish with a 1-3 o'clock Mass and finding none. So I find myself facing a dilemma: go to 5:30 Mass and be about 2 hrs late for my Grandma's 88th birthday party (she is an hour away) or skip Mass altogether. I want to do the best thing. What's the best thing? I don't want to disappoint my Grandma on what could be her last birthday .... I don't want to miss Mass. Maybe I could just go to church and spend an hour in prayer. Not the same, I know. What would Jesus have me do? Edited June 9, 2013 by Lilllabettt
ToJesusMyHeart
You could offer your 5:30pm Mass for your Grandma to have a great birthday and to receive many graces, etc. That way you're sort of with her, even though you're at Mass. I'm sure your family would understand why you're late. My SD tells me that one of Satan's #1 goals is to make people miss Mass. Don't fall for it! inunionwithrome
Attend Mass and then God will guide, bless, and get you there on time for your grandmother's birthday.
WillT
Invite a priest to the birthday party and have him say Mass.

ToJesusMyHeart
my family isnt catholic. All the more reason to go to Mass and offer Mass for them. (my family isn't Catholic either so I can understand the tension.)
Lilllabettt
i kind of do have an excuse because THEY are the ones who changed the schedule around. maybe i will just leave out that its because I have to go to Mass.
WillT
They don't have to be. :| Seriously though, you could probably call your pastor and explain the situation. Maybe he could give you a dispensation and you could go to a daily Mass tomorrow or something.

Or you can tell them that you have to go to Mass and denounce them for being hell-bound pagans. I hear that's a great way of evangelizing.
OnlySunshine
I agree that Mass comes first. ;)
AnneLine
Lord knows I don't miss Mass if there is any way around it... and I hate to have to make a choice like this.... BUT you raised a really good point as well, Lillliabettt in that THEY changed the time. Any way you could go to Mass and join them for dessert? Making amends for coming late but that they had switched the schedule around after you had blocked the earlier time for them? Before you posted the piece about them changing the time, I was thinking the same as Willt on this one. But I think there is a factor here in that it is a birthday party for an elderly lady.... who just wouldn't understand about Mass. Yet the Mass is a primary obligation. So, my first thought is to ask the Pastor to render an opinion... and just peacefully do what he tells you. So do what your soul and heart tell you is best. Basilisa Marie
Would it be easier to just call and tell them now that you're going to be late, but you'll make it as soon as you can, and not mention that you'd being late because you're going to mass? I know some families get more annoyed at Catholic things than no reason at all. Either that or call your priest and explain the situation and let him advise you. Whichever you feel most comfortable doing. :)
