Byzantine
Welcome home, Byz!!!! I should think that you could count those sections of the Phylokalia as separate books.. or as a 4 giant books and give us the page numbers.... Thanks! BG, welcome!!!! The rules Byz established are simple -- any books you started during the summer period and finished during the contest are fair game! We arbitrate disputes by taking people out to the village green and pelting them with popcorn. No mods need work... we want 'em reading! This is correct. L&T I wasn't sure if 'Wisdom' was another book... or if it was simply honoring truth spoken. I've given you book credit for the book of the Bible.... ;) I'm inclined to think she was acknowledging the truth. Either that, or she was practicing her Byzantine liturgical exclamations (though I think not, as she is Armenian and I just looked through the text of their liturgy and it seems that exclamation is not present. Sorry LT I probably should have looked through your liturgy before making a lame liturgical reference. I still think we could let people count small prayer books. Why not? Byz? I've given up on the LOTH...counting it, but not praying it. ;) Here's what we'll do: We'll count prayer books (including LOTH), but only by page number (since you generally don't go straight through a prayer book). Is that a compromise we can live with? By the way LT, I met an Armenian Catholic subdeacon and his sons who had come into communion with Rome from Armenian Orthodoxy. The subdeacon had been raised fundamentalist but then started reading the Fathers.
Anastasia13
By the way LT, I met an Armenian Catholic subdeacon and his sons who had come into communion with Rome from Armenian Orthodoxy. The subdeacon had been raised fundamentalist but then started reading the Fathers. Learn everything you can from that man, and eat any food he offers you-for it is tasty. "if it was simply honoring truth spoken." This. I have not read the book of Wisdom. I also do not have easy access to the pages I have read as I no longer of occasion to drive by a certain library. I also am unlikely to beat someone on pages even more than I am unlike to beat someone on books read.
Byzantine
Learn everything you can from that man, and eat any food he offers you-for it is tasty. The problem is that he lives in Michigan and I live in PA. Though if he offers me any food, I'll be sure to grab it. Story time: His eldest (I think) son was walking with me and suddenly he said: "You're THE <first name> <last name>!" I was unsure whether I should prepare to receive homage or run. Then I found out they go to my "aunt and uncle's" (the real relationship is too complicated) ByzCat parish and had performed a play I wrote for St. Nicholas Day. They liked it! But it's still kind of strange to be "THE <name>."
LittleWaySoul
The reason I really don't want to count LOTH is because I do night prayer every night and after a week, the prayers are the same. So I'm reading pages over. That would mean I'd have to keep track of how many times I went through the rotation and bah. That just seems like a lot of work. My other reasoning is that it's not a typical "book" book. It's psalms and little prayers and responses and such. If, say, someone had a prayer book formatted to be like a normal book (say, a novel), I'd feel better about it. Ultimately, I feel like LOTH should be out, and any other prayer book should be considered on a case-by-case basis. Just my two cents, anyway. Dr. Bombay
Is the Summa considered a prayer book? Cuz I read the whole thing every day. True story.

AnneLine
Doc Bomb... Byz...all the rest of you -- You guys are SO FUNNY!!!! :) rotfl GOL I want the props back!!!!! LWS I hear you on Night Prayer (find it the most penitential for exactly that reason...) If you decide to count it, just call it 3 pages a day ... 20 pages per week? ten weeks of summer for 200? Just make it simple..... I'd guestimate Morning and Evening Prayer Office of Readings at maybe 10 pages per day? 70 per week? 700 for the summer? If anything, that's probably an underestimate.... Doc Bomb -- I'm surprised you aren't reading Migne's 160 volumes of the Greek Fathers http://graeca.patristica.net/ and/or the his Latin Fathers.... http://www.documentacatholicaomnia.eu/1815-1875,_Migne,_Patrologia_Latina_01._Rerum_Conspectus_Pro_Tomis_Ordinatus,_MLT.html If you don't want either of those collections, I guess the Summa will have to do.... ;) Era Might, I keep waiting for someone to set up about 40 CD players and books on disc.... literary cacophony 24/7 for the next 2 months....If you DO check out that many brailebooks, be sure to bring your little red wagon...and you'll have the WEIGHTIEST tomes award for sure! AND..... BG reminded me on his random thread that today through Friday is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Wow. I think I will interrupt my other reading and slam through The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara again. It is a favorite book of mine... and how often does one get to read through the narrative of the 150th anniversary of something ON THE ANIIVERSARY...? Heading upstairs to grab the book... And... L&T, I'll take the 'Wisdom Literature' off your count... but I do hope you keep reading with us. (Come up with some category we won't be able to do and I can find something to send off to you... always extra books around my house.... ;) Plan to update at some point in next day or so.... have a good time, everyone! Chrysophylax
BOOKS IN PROGRESS (in alphabetical order) Chrysophlax: Maurice & Therese AND A Shepherd's Look at Psalm Twenty-Three I am confused! I don't think I know of any books by those titles! Actually, the book I have in progress is The Last Crusader by Louis de Wohl. More books I read: ~Rowan and the Travelers by Emily Roda (re-read, very easy book) (192 pgs) ~Point Blanc (from alex rider series, but the graphic novel! Does that count?) (144 pgs) ~Sunlight and Shadow by Cameron Dokey (This book was absolutely amazing, the best fairytale book I have read in a really long time!) (192 pgs) ~Venitia by Georgette Heyer (a re-read, amazing) (384 pgs) ~Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon (256 pgs) Very dissapointing. The prince was a horrible person, and the story was depressing ~Pirate talk, or, mermalade by Terese Svoboda. Weird weird weird.... I didn't like it very much (151 pgs) ~False Mermaid by Erin Hart (336 pgs) Wow, that is a suspensful murder mystery. Pretty dark, but quite interesting! So that is 7 more books and 1655 pages. Now I should go back and total that pages from the books I already submitted...
Chrysophylax
Okay, I'm going to add page count to my old submissions: Castaways of the Flying Dutchman 327 Bolo! 496 Jennifer 160 The Thief 304 The Queen of Attolia 368 The King of Attolia 432 In the Best Families 272 The Hunters: Brotherband Chronicles Book 3 432 These Old Shades 384 The Outcasts 464 The Ruins of Gorlan 272 The Burning Bridge 288 The Foundling 439 The Crimson Thread 240 Montmorency; Thief, Liar Gentleman? 178 Counterfeit Son 192 total: 5248 Amazon makes it really easy to look up page numbers of books! Actually, do I get to count page numbers for a book on cd? One of those was a book on cd... If not that total would be 4976.
AnneLine
Chrysophlax, in response to your question: AnneLine, on 27 Jun 2013 - 11:38 AM, said: BOOKS IN PROGRESS (in alphabetical order) Chrysophlax: Maurice & Therese AND A Shepherd's Look at Psalm Twenty-Three You responded: I am confused! I don't think I know of any books by those titles! Actually, the book I have in progress is The Last Crusader by Louis de Wohl. Chrys... you have reason to be confused... ol' AnneLine didn't get her head out of the books long enough to realize it was Catholicterp7 who is reading those 2.... I'm also in the process of re-reading Maurice and Therese and A Shepherd's Look at Psalm Twenty-three. :paperbag: List will be adjusted for both of you later today.... AnneLine
Chrys, you asked about page counts for audiobooks.... Byz already said audiobooks count, and I would think you could use the Amazon book page count to get the number of pages... presuming it isn't an abridged version..... That's what I'd do.... and did for someone who wasn't sure what to do about a Nook Book. We aren't goin' for the Guinness Book of Records.... it seems reasonable to me? Good job on the page counts -- and YES!!!! Amazon does make it easy to count 'em up. Hint, hint?!
Dr. Bombay
Cowboys and Aliens. Ok, that was a movie. But I'm sure a script was necessary so there was reading involved at some point. On second thought, I doubt a script was involved at all. But Harrison Ford was in it. So, yeah. Count me. :bounce:
AnneLine
Byz? what you think of the good Doctor's idea? I'm counting the Summa as 'light summer reading in progress', but for Cowboys and Aliens, I'd think the Doctor gotta cough up the paper script or an on-line version (or at least give us some page numbers for goodness sake!) (or a novel version.... or an audiobook) or it won't work.... at least that would be MY call on this one.... call me grumpy. :brutebeast: But Byz is the Supreme Court around here.... Anyone else wanna release some page counts or new books before I formally update? Watch for the updates about 11:30 PDT tonight.... I should tell you that as of right now Cartermia at 25 books is just 2 ahead of both Chrysophlax and Catholicterp7 -- tied at 23. Where is everyone else???? AND Chrystoplax has run away with the page count at an impressive 6903!!!! This might change if other people put up their page counts. As she noted, easy to use Amazon to do this....
