Nihil Obstat
Considering Our Lord stated emphatically that most people are going to hell, that should be all the motivation one needs in that regard I should think. Did you not hear that universal salvation is so much trendier?
Dr. Bombay
Did you not hear that universal salvation is so much trendier? Yes, I've heard. It's also heresy and can thus be ignored. Trendy usually = heretical, that's my motto.
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Considering Our Lord stated emphatically that most people are going to hell, that should be all the motivation one needs in that regard I should think. JC " many are on the path to destruction and few find the straight and narrow." Still he doesn't say the many are going to eternal damnation, he simply says there ways are destructive. Dr. Bombay
JC " many are on the path to destruction and few find the straight and narrow." Still he doesn't say the many are going to eternal damnation, he simply says there ways are destructive. I'm afraid that's torturing the text. The constant theological consensus has been that the majority of mankind will be lost. You may count Augustine and Aquinas among countless others who held this position. This should not, however, be a cause for despair. If anything, meditating on this should cause us all to redouble our efforts to love God with our whole minds, hearts and souls and our neighbors as ourselves. morostheos
Having grown up in a warm and fuzzy church, I don't know that I've ever had fear as a motivation. I do think I could do with slightly more fear than none, although I also rather like the child-like attitude of wanting to do anything and everything you can to please your Father and being greatly pained when I disappoint him because I know he wants me to be my best. I know he wants what's best for me, so if I do my best to please him and trust him I will have nothing to fear. I think the key point is that "doing your best" really must mean that - it doesn't mean trying and then deciding only to do the things that don't seem so hard. That is when the fear would be good to have. :P
Ice_nine
I hope nobody ends up in hell, even though I understand this hope will most likely be in vain. And I hope, even tho Christ said the road was narrow, and those I know and love most are not abiding in the church atm, that they will repent and turn to God before they die so they will be able to enjoy eternal paradise. I think if I'm being honest, fear motivates me to a certain extent. Burning eternal is something I would certainly like me to avoid, but my fear is mostly for people other than myself. I don't think this is presumptuous, but I have faith in God and follow Him as best as I can and repent when I screw up so . . . I ain't know what else I can do on that end. EIther way I pray God will have mercy on us all.
Socrates
I refuse to speculate, but liberals assure me it's probably really motivated by racism.
Socrates
Did you not hear that universal salvation is so much trendier? Liberals also assure me that, good or bad, i can look forward to an eternity sitting on a cloud strumming harps and sipping martinis with Hitler, Stalin, Judas and Satan. (Only the salvation of conservatives is in doubt.) Edited July 14, 2013 by Socrates

dairygirl4u2c
i dont know why there's such hostility to the question. even catholic theology distinguishes between perfect and imperfect condtrition, love v fear motivations. it's called perfect contirition because while both types can be used as a basis for forgiveness, perfect contrition is better than imperfect contrition. this means that we should all be asking outselves this qeustion. if you have perfect contrition and it doesn't affect you, kudos to you. we are not all so much graced as that. im not trying to imply anything about anyone specificlly. most people need to ask the question. PhuturePriest
Yes, I've heard. It's also heresy and can thus be ignored. Trendy usually = heretical, that's my motto. For example: Capri pants. Trendy but heretically ugly.
BG45
I'm with Apo. Liberals also assure me that, good or bad, i can look forward to an eternity sitting on a cloud strumming harps and sipping martinis with Hitler, Stalin, Judas and Satan. (Only the salvation of conservatives is in doubt.) At my old Baptist summer camp, they told us we'd meet Hitler in Heaven because of Once Saved Always Saved... Quid Est Veritas?
Wait. When exactly was Hitler "saved"? I missed something.
