jazzytakara Posted May 30, 2013 Share Posted May 30, 2013 This past week I applied for multiple jobs, when asked to write out my availability I wrote to have Sundays mornings and Monday evenings off. A couple of jobs and one interview asked why, so I said I had volunteering obligations. Although I do have volunteer obligations on Monday evenings, I wanted Sunday mornings off for mass. I didn't tell those who asked, as so many applications tell you not to list anything that shows religious affiliation. Also in the past when I asked a former manager for Sundays off for church (something I asked for in the interview) he yelled at me in the middle of the store, saying he would have never hired me had he known I wanted Sunday mornings off for church. I didn't want to lie, but I was so worried I wouldn't get hired if I said I wanted Sunday's off for mass, as many are against any kind of church today and job advisers tell people to not mention religious activities when we can. I have been searching for a job for over a year and owe my credit card and desperately need employment, but I just feel awful for not being honest about why I wanted Sunday mornings free. Is this a mortal or venial sin? If anyone ever asked me directly if I went to church or was Catholic/Christian, I would answer honestly with a yes, but since they didn't really need to know why I needed certain days off, I didn't think it was a big deal to tell them specifically what I was doing on Sundays and Mondays...I just really want to know if this is mortal or venial... They don't get to ask but I understand that if they ask we will answer because we want the job. Relax. I don't think you're gonna get struck by lightening.
