xTrishaxLynnx
I'd just like to discuss this... http://msnvideo.msn.com/?videoid=5742733a-e758-43a1-94c0-54774997a69f&src=v5:share:sharepermalink:&from=sharepermalink ...the burning bush, in particular. I would need to read the part about the Nile again... I remember the part where it turns to blood, but none of the events surrounding it. lol Dragons? Huh? I don't even... I know they are presenting this as "innocent" and as "facts" that people might want to know, but when they say things like: "There's a theory that..." While it might be a fact that someone has a theory about some of these things, I think they're purposely being misleading, by making people believe these "theories" are the actual facts. Not that I'm surprised. It's just sad. I apologize for the horrible grammar and random thought dumpage in this post; I am just on a short break from work and wanted to get this up quickly. Basilisa Marie
None of that is reflective of good scholarship. They weren't even sourced with actual sources. The seraphim weren't dragons. Leviathan is the dragon snake thing, and some interpretations of scripture combined with pious traditions among the ancient Jews said that God played with him for three hours every day in the sea. :)
CrossCuT
It should be renamed to "10 really weird things you dont care about that are somewhat relating to the bible" Although Im all down with the dragons thing! Thats COOOL! I wanna be a dragon!
Guest
I thought the thread was 10 things you didn't know about the Bible...And #1 for me was going to be that a lot of the stories never happened...Just finding this out as a 31 y/o adult has challenged my faith to put it kindly...But being Catholic helps and is a lot better for me then the alternative if I was a protestant and put all of my faith into the Bible alone...If this was the case I would pry cease to be christian... xTrishaxLynnx
It should be renamed to "10 really weird things you dont care about that are somewhat relating to the bible" Although Im all down with the dragons thing! Thats COOOL! I wanna be a dragon! I agree about the name change... though I'm not sure what I'd change it to. They have 3 different names for the video at different places on the site. One is "10 unique facts about the bible" which is a lie, because I've heard most of them before; I mean, who HASN'T heard the "theory" that Jesus had flesh-and-blood siblings? BE a dragon? That would be strange. I admit the idea of dragons being real is kind of cool, though. Edited May 30, 2013 by xTrishaxLynnx
ChristinaTherese
1: The Douay-Rheims never says "fiery" in Isaiah 6:1-8, which is the passage that they cited and a truly wonderful passage that y'all should read, but it has absolutely nothing to do with dragons. The English Standard Version (ESV), which is the actual version they cited, does not say that the seraphim were fiery either, it only says "Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!â€[b]" The only fire in the whole passage is in a "burning coal" that one of the seraphim took from the altar. 2: Not even going there. "Jesus had numerous brothers & sisters"... I believed that for most of my life, but I also called my adopted sister my sister, my dad's first wife's nephew my cousin, etc. It's not worth delving into. (Just to clarify, my dad's first wife died. Which is why he ended up remarrying.) 3: Yup. I was also told by one of my professors that there was a misprint that said that "thou shalt commit adultery." And it's really funny. 4: Yes. Lots of people die. I've never bothered to know how many, so I'm just going to assume that their number of "over 100,000 people . . . discounting Noah's Flood" is reasonable. The other part is really out of context. I mean, it's true, but it's taken so far out of context that they abused the real meaning. 5: So? And did it grow in that area? And does anybody care anyway? No, scratch that. If there's a bush that burns without being hurt, that's really cool. But it still doesn't matter in this situation. 6: No, it is never stated that people become angels. Angels and people are different and will remain so. The part about castrati not being allowed to enter Heaven is a bit off, since Deuteronomy 23:1 (their source) is in the OT law. And it's talking about "the assembly of the Lord" (Dt 23:1, ESV), which did not mean Heaven. 7: I guess the plagues could have been caused by climate changes... but they would have been extremely unusual. AKA, probably miraculous. And I don't see why God can't use the means He created to do things like the plagues. 8: Samson had some pretty interesting stuff, and killed a bunch of people, yes. I don't remember the circumstances, but the fact that he killed a bunch of people does not mean that God approved of all of it. (I think there might have been one or two... interesting killing sprees. I don't remember and don't want to take the time to check.) 9: Blech. There are some awful "translations" of the Bible out there, and they aren't necessarily great. Translations into creoles would look awful to us too, but they might be viable. Lolcat speech is just not right and probably an attempt to mock. I mean, "ceiling cat" looks a lot more like "sky fairy" than "God", and is presumably an attempt to mock. 10: Um.... So? I mean, that sounds nasty, but why does it matter to us? General reactions: Either a) it may well be a weird historical fact, but it doesn't matter; b) they quoted out of context to make things look bad; or c) they're just plain wrong. But whatever the case, they're just trying to make things look bad. The only purpose, as far as I can tell is to mock. Oh, and I know that I put the numbers in backwards and I don't care.
