Socrates
The Church has traditionally taught that the suffering of the damned in hell consists in both poena damni ("pain of loss"), consisting of the pain of the loss of the Beatific Vision of God, as well as poena sensus ("pain of sense"), which is physical pain (or similar to to physical pain) of the burning of hellfire. The Church teaches that after the General Resurrection, the bodies of the damned will be resurrected, to experience eternal pain and torment. Although we don't know the exact nature of hellfire, it's taught that it will cause a pain akin to burning. From the Catholic Encyclopedia: The poena sensus, or pain of sense, consists in the torment of fire so frequently mentioned in the Holy Bible. According to the greater number of theologians the term fire denotes a material fire, and so a real fire. We hold to this teaching as absolutely true and correct. However, we must not forget two things: from Catharinus (d. 1553) to our times there have never been wanting theologians who interpret the Scriptural term fire metaphorically, as denoting an incorporeal fire; and secondly, thus far the Church has not censured their opinion. Some few of the Fathers also thought of a metaphorical explanation. Nevertheless, Scripture and tradition speak again and again of the fire of hell, and there is no sufficient reason for taking the term as a mere metaphor. elizabeth09
To get children to obey, I think its okay, in some stories, to tell them that Hell is full of fire.

dairygirl4u2c
Penn Jillette, the atheist illusionist and comedian: "I don't respect people who don't proselytize. I don't respect that at all. If you believe that there's a heaven and hell and people could be going to hell or not getting eternal life or whatever, and you think that it's not really worth telling them this because it would make it socially awkward.... How much do you have to hate somebody to believe that everlasting life is possible and not tell them that?"
