The Novo-Tikhvin Women's Monastery was founded in the late eighteenth century, and at its height in the early twentieth century the monastery was populated by over 1,000 sisters. In the 1920s the monastery was closed by the atheist Bolsheviks, and many of the buildings of the monastery were destroyed. With the collapse of the godless Soviet Union in the early 1990s the monastery was re-founded and the monastery complex has been rebuilt. There are presently 11 nuns, 42 cenobites, and over 70 novices living, praying, and working at the monastery.
