Pax!
I'm travelling to Rome this weekend and I just have to see the pope. What do I do?

To take part in the general audience, it is necessary to reserve tickets. They are free, and are distributed from the Prefecture of the Pontifical House (Prefettura della Casa Pontificia) in the Vatican City, entered through the Bronze Door in the right-hand (facing the basilica) collonnade. The office is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the phone number is (+39) 06 69 88 31 14. Tickets should be reserved several days in advance. You can also try faxing them on (+39) 06 69 88 58 63. Please note that opening hours and telephone numbers may change. The fax will need to contain contain information about the number of persons you need tickets for, the date you're interested in and your contact address in Rome. No matter how you book tickets, they must be collected at the Bronze Door as mentioned above. An alternative is to ask your hotel to provide tickets; many hotels will do this.

The Papal Audiences are held on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 AM either St. Peter's Square or in the Pope Paul VI Audience Hall (in August at Castel Gandolfo). To enter the Square (or the Audience Hall), you will have to go through security first (through the colonnade on either side, as directed by the guards.) Just follow the crowds and go early! We recommend that you arrive 3 hours early in order to get a good seat. The Audience is not a Mass, it is a time for pilgrims and visitors to greet, and listen to, the Pope. Pictures are allowed to be taken; religious articles will be blessed by the Pope during the Audience; it lasts about 1 ½ hours and includes prayers, singing, a brief homily, and blessings, all in different languages. DRESS appropriately (no shorts or sleeveless shirts) and don’t bring backpacks or knapsacks. If there is heavy rain, and having the audience outside in not possible, the attendees are split into two groups, one group in the Audience Hall and one group in the Basilica.

You may want to check the Vatican website periodically. www.vatican.va, click on Latest Updates, then Prefecture of the Papal Household, and look at the schedule on the right hand side of the page.)

The Pope says the Angelus on Sundays. Unless something has changed with Pope Francis, I believe you just show up to St. Peter's Square and wait for him to come out the window. From what I've seen on the news though, a TON of people have been coming for the Angelus, so you might want to get there early.

If you ever are in Rome in the summer when the Pope is at Castel Gandolfo (that is, if Pope Francis goes there during the summer like Pope Benedict), you should definitely go there for the Angelus. I went twice last August, and it was so awesome! It is a lot smaller, and the window is a lot lower, so you get a much better view of the Pope. (We got there several hours early for that!)

Sorry, I didn't realize you were only going to be there for the weekend. I assumed that you were going this weekend, but would be there longer. Good luck.

Call me if you want to meet up :) I'll PM you my number. I play organ at a mass near the Vatican, so if you don't have any special plans for mass you should come to the 10am in English with me, grab a coffee and then go to the popes angelus ;)

Ps if you come with me you will undoubtedly get an awesome homily.
