Anastasia13
Officially defending my dissertation proposal on Monday, November 18th at 12pm in the conference room. I appreciate any/all prayers. So nervous and excited simultaneously. Also my chair is currently buried beneath a mountain of promotion packets for the university-wide promotion committee. I mean that semi-literally. The pile begins on the floor and blocks all view of her from the hallway; granted she's 4" 11" but still... Congrats. Praying it goes well. That is a lot of paper. TheresaThoma
BG I'll be asking St Joseph of Cupertino to pray for you, he has been a good friend to me during exams. He has a very interesting story!
BG45
Thanks TheresaThoma :) I appreciate it! What is his story, if you don't mind my asking? Job hunting now and feeling stressed. Diss. Chair a few months ago was "you shouldn't get a job until you've finished the dissertation", Diss. Chair today is, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'VE NOT APPLIED ANYWHERE YET? HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET HIRED?!" BG45
Yup that was my feeling too...I've found 7 jobs to apply for. There are 'hundreds' in my field around the country, but once you prune back the adjunct only positions (which conventionally, once you're an adjunct, it becomes infinitely harder to get a tenured position) there's around 50 actual positions posted at this time. A number of those are research institutions which wouldn't accept me with my limited publications. One is an Evangelical school which puts in a paragraph inviting diversity on faculty, but makes it clear diversity means White Anglo Saxon Protestant/Evangelical and states that the "successful applicant will blend Evangelical messages with their lessons". Now for a little news locally...our Borough Council President was re-elected, despite stiff opposition from a student write in candidate. To describe why this saddens me, I point you all to an article after Homecoming in the local paper, where she accuses the students of making the entire town feel like "prisoners in their own homes" and states that she intends to pressure landlords to hire armed security guards to police their own properties. TheresaThoma
The main part of his story is that St Joseph was a very poor student and during his time you had to pass an oral exam to become a priest. When it came to his turn he was asked the only question that he knew the answer to. Transitions and job hunting are so stressful! I'll be praying for you. MissyP89
What happens after the proposal defense? You get to defend the real thing?

Then yes, I do believe I will be praying for his intercession as the date approaches. Doing my slides right now for the Defense and freaking out. Thank you for the prayers, I do appreciate them! What happens after the proposal defense? You get to defend the real thing? Not yet...then I get to collect the data in February (and hopefully only February), then write up Chapter 4 and 5, then once my chair is satisfied with them, defend the real thing. Though everyone says the proposal is the harder defense, since the final defense is just summing up what you found. But it means there is hopefully a light at the end of the tunnel! :) -- Today's plan: 7-8: Breakfast during office hours. Got permission from final person for using some of their survey items in my diss. 8-9: Unwind, goof off, work on NanoWriMo. 9-10: Show South Park episode on juvenile hall, discuss themes related to class. 10-11: Find new way down to courts class, as construction has literally cut campus in half. 11-1: Show two separate cases in courts, because I mis-calculated my slides and ended a day early on Wednesday. 1-2: Run back up to first building, show South Park again, discuss themes. 2:30-3:30 Office hours/work on slides/send e-mails out to 3 profs asking for letters of rec for 7 places I'm applying to/revise Vita. 3:30-?: Finish slides, finish Vita revision, supposed to get sometime this weekend the revisions one of my committee members wants on my Qualitative methods, so I can have that changed for the defense on the 18th. BG45
Random Update: it says a lot about the past few weeks of the real world that I'm looking forward to presenting at a conference in Atlanta, just because I can't wait for a night in a hotel room where I won't have to be in my office. :P

BG45
Thanks, I appreciate the prayers! Pre-tested my survey, have some stuff to fix. But hopefully I should get it all done on time pending my committee's decision. (Hopefully in favor of my passing!) :) Will definitely pray to him! Sorry to not be on as much everyone, just a really "AHHH" week going on, next week will be as well (and without net access at points due to conference).
