Finding Jobs Out Of State

So recently I posted that I'm looking for nursing positions and am willing to move out of state.  My only dilemma is this: How do I interview for all these positions? It hasn't mattered yet since none of the jobs I applied for have contacted me for an interview  <_<  Nevertheless, suppose that one of the out-of-state jobs contacts me and says they'd like to interview me.  I can't very well fly all over the US for interviews, especially if I'm not offered the job in the end.  I figured I could ask if they would be willing to do a phone interview first, and then if they're seriously interested in me I would fly there for a face-to-face interview.  Can anybody weigh in on this from their own experience or opinion?

Have you talked to any recruiters? I have a friend that was just looking for nursing jobs nationwide and I know she used a recruiter. I don't really know how all of that works though.

Skype and phone interview. If they are seriously interested in you, but feel the need to meet you in person before making a job offer, they will fly you out for an interview. For a business, paying an extra $1,000 to hire the right person rather than a bad apple saves them a lot of money in the long run, so if a business is accepting out of state applicants they may very well fly in their top 1-3 candidates for in person interviews before solidifying a decision.

Most businesses are rational and don't expect you to fork out tons of money in travel costs for a job you may not get just to interview.

I agree with slappo. Most jobs will work through recruiters or job fairs to do interviews. Also skype and phone calls can do a world of good. If they are truly interested in you, they will for over the $$$ to bring you to them. I have had parishes do this for me when I was interviewing out of state, so it shouldn't be a problem with hospitals.

God bless-

Agreed---I think most places, if they are not willing to pay for your trip put there, they would be willing to do at least an initial interview over the phone or on something like Skype. But they probably will definitely want you to come for a other interview in-person as a second step. Of course, you probably wouldn't want to accept a job without ever seeing the place anyway.

I applied for teaching jobs in Florida (I'm in Illinois). One of them was willing to do an interview over the phone, because they didn't want me to have to take the time and money to come down (they didn't seem like they could fly me down, but it was a Catholic elementary school so ey probably don't have the funds.) honestly, I don't like talking on the phone much, so I didn't really like the phone interview, but sometimes it is necessary. The other wanted me to come--they didn't pay for the trip either, but I worked it in to a trip to visit friends.

Definitely ask about the phone interview---I wouldn't pay for a trip unless I was almost certain I had the job, or if I was already planning on being in the area.

Skype and phones, yes + the flight they pay for if seriously interested. Plus what Morostheos said: RECRUITER! They can handle all that for you.
