CatherineM
Doing what I do, helping marginalized kids, can be hard. Dealing with bureaucrats will drive you nuts. Hearing their stories is hard. Today I heard something so horrific, that I had to take prescription nausea medicine afterwards. I thought I was going to pass out. One of the kids who's a crack baby, now 18 years old, was placed into state care at 12. No one would foster him, so he ended up in a home run by a non-profit. It's a bit of a cross between a boarding school and a juvenile prison. While there he was beaten up so badly by one of the other kids that he lost a testical and the remaining one is deformed. We've been trying to help this kid get on disability to get him into a group home and away from his crack addict mom who takes his welfare checks for drugs. We have to list all his disabilities and read the doctor's report with his permission to fill out his forms. The worst part is that he thinks it's no big deal. He's used to bad stuff happening, so to him horrible is normal. I had to keep a calm face. Hardest thing I've done in a long time.
AnneLine
:console: Oh, Catherine, you take in so very much.... kids, stories, just plain evil stuff. I've had to listen to stories like that... including some today. Just rips you to pieces, doesn't it... But... and this is a big one.... we are here, and God is using us. People need someone to whom they can bring their stories. And God is the one who listens to our stories. And I, for one, am grateful. And His heart is big enough, and so are his arms. Don't be afraid to go have a good cry. Tonight I'm holding you, and if I can help in any way, just PM me. I'm up and I'm praying for you.
CatherineM
We got him a new bike through a local charity because Zach, our son, is a lifelong friend of his and the boys all ride bikes together. He kept it in Zach's room for fear his mom would sell it for drugs. It warmed up, and the boys are all riding, but he never went with them. Now I know why. He'll never be able to ride a bike apparently. He sold his bike to one of the other kids and plays video games by himself upstairs while they are out. Oh, Catherine, I lost Phatmass access last night, and couldn't get back in. This just breaks my heart. Could he use something like a skateboard or other wheeled thing to be with the others? There must be something to do for him..... But you know... even if he couldn't use it, he knew you tried, and I bet that is worth a lot.... You are a wonderful mother, truly, you are... CatherineM
I went down and bought a Hobson Easyseat this morning. I used to use one on my exercise bike. It's basically a two cheek bike seat without the saddle part in the middle. You can adjust the two seats apart to any width, and each side kind of rocks as you ride. I thought it might allow him to ride again. We got the bike back, put that on it,fine tuned it this way and that until it was comfortable, and I'm not sure he's been off it since. Zach is exhausted, but Brandon keeps saying one more time. This keeps up and the kid is going to sleep with his bike. I told Zach this morning that the best revenge is to live well. That drives the bad guys nuts.
