Etsy - The Good And The Bad

I bought some moustache waxes from Man's Face Stuff on etsy once. Scented too. The Gin & Tonic is my favorite, which is why it's almost gone. The All Nighter is good too, smells like coffee and tobacco. I did get a tin of unscented, which was a mistake, because the natural smell of the ingredients isn't that great. Not bad, but not great either, and since it's sitting right under my nose all day...

Oh that's so fun!! Bookmarking for gifts!

I have never bought anything on Etsy but I do browse and there do seem to be some good things. But there is (inevitably I think) also a lot of bad stuff. Regretsy....some examples.

I love to browse Etsy. I've bought a total of two things: an old book about the priesthood (I love old, antique books..) and a tie clip. I was very impressed with the book, but not so impressed with the tie-clip. Online, the clip looked really sharp and sturdy, when I got it it was smaller than I expected and was made out of a cheaper grade of aluminum then I expected. But, eh..

I also love all things old-fashioned, especially when it comes to Catholic things, ie. Rosary's, Missals, medals. I like to browse some of that stuff too.

I have a love/hate relationship with Etsy.

I love to buy from individuals or small businesses. I love handmade. I love unique things. (Who doesn't love these things?) But I often find myself totally underwhelmed by Etsy's selection.

Anyone else hesitant to pay a lot of money for fairly simple items on Etsy? Saw a sponsored Facebook post today from Etsy, pimping out a hand "painted" mug. By hand painted I mean to say it was written on with a Sharpie and then baked. I made a similar mug for my Grandma for Christmas and it cost me less than ten dollars total WITH a new Sharpie.

I feel like so much on Etsy is just like this. It's hard to find the good sellers (like IcePrincessKRS's BIL) who have unique talents.

Who has a hard time buying from Etsy? Who has found amesome things? Who are some of your favorite sellers?

Random promotion of a small business I love: Makr. I own an original Makr wallet (ladies' wallet. white with beautiful floral cutout.) and my dad owns one of the men's wallets. They are SO GREAT. Expensive yes (full disclosure, I won the two wallets in a contest) but such great quality.

I love some of the stuff I've seen on Etsy, too.  There were some incredible scapulars but someone (not the person on VS, AuthorOfLife) wanted $45 for them!  I've also seen some beautiful jewelry which was out of my price league.  :(

I understand where you are coming from. I have found some things on Etsy that resembled a kindergarten class's craft project, but I have found a lot of amazing things made by devoted people. I have a bias, but this is my aunt's page:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/CandiSuesCreations?page=1

She is 100% dedicated to her work and I love her stuff. Etsy to me is like shopping at a Thrift Store, you have search/work hard to find the hidden treasures.
