Iron Man 3 - Anybody Disappointed?

The owner of my local comic shop pointed something out to me last week: there's no definitive Mandarin story. Not just that there's no single unified backstory, but not a singular story that everyone can point to and say "THIS is the classic Mandarin story."

I think that's the problem with the movie's portrayal-- they decided to use the longest tenured Iron Man rogue as a punch line. It's not that they made him a pawn in Aldrich's scheme--that could have been cool. It's that they did it for LAUGHS, as though it was a joke and something to giggle at. Just like everything else in the movie, it was winky and schlocky.

 

 

As a movie unfolded, I thought that the Trevor Slattery character was a cover for the real Mandarin who would introduce himself later in the movie.  How wrong I was. Ben Kingsley, the actor who portrayed Gandhi, went out like a chump out for the count.

 

 The hideous thing that Tony bought for Pepper is an apt visual metaphor for the utter ridiculousness that is Iron Man 3. It's almost on par with the Green Lantern movie.
