I Have A New Addiction

Basically, over several years, serious SSB players are able to develop a tier list, ranking characters from most to least effective, when played by people of equal strengths. Obviously it's a very difficult thing to test, but it is possible.

Some people deny that these tiers are valid, and quibbling about minor details is certainly relevant, but frankly there is just no justification for claiming that every character is equal. They simply are not. For a game of that complexity, there are always going to be some characters who, for one reason or another, are more effective.

For Brawl, everyone agrees far and away that Meta Knight is the best, all things being equal. It's a combination of his size and speed, as well as his weight, his combo interruptions, his glide mechanic, and his move priority. So they usually call Meta Knight S tier. Olimar, Diddy Kong, Ice Climbers, and Snake generally round out the A tier, and a couple characters hit a grey area between A and B. Zelda is generally put towards the bottom, although Ganondorf almost always places dead last.

Of course at the end of the day it always comes down to individual skill, and some people play better as certain characters who match their strengths. I play best by far as Mr. Game and Watch, who is generally considered a high-middle/lower-high tier character. Also some characters, because of individual quirks, are particularly strong or weak against certain other characters, which can spice up character choices at times.

I can't help but feel this has moved away from the topic of the thread.

Oh, there are many more than eleven. :D

Final Fantasy is pretty cool. Its quality is perhaps not what it once was... I would highly recommend Final Fantasy 10, at least if you like old school JRPGs. FFXIII is a bit more dynamic, but I did not like the combat mechanics quite as much. 10 was entirely turn based and there were more strategic combat options. Plus the aeon system was super awesome.

FF10 is available on the Playstation store, I think, and rumour is that they are going to re-release it in high definition for the PS4.

Seriously, check this out (but ignore the custom character name in the first one. ):

I feel like we should make a different thread to talk about video games so we can continue to dedicate this to Harry Potter! ^.^

I love the books. I read the first in 6th grade - my mom ordered it for me because she thought I would enjoy it. At that point at least the first two, maybe three books were out. But I clearly remember the day the fourth book came out. I was waiting anxiously for the UPS truck (it was a Saturday - I still remember!!) and I freaked when I saw it drive past my house. I actually ran after the freaking UPS, flagged the driver down, and got him to come back. My mom had to take the book from me so I would come out and eat dinner. :)

I read the series in the summer between 4th and 5th grade. I have reread them several times since...

I can see why many people preferred the Twilight Princess graphics, but I actually am more partial to what they did for Skyward Sword, with the more vibrant colours and softer character designs. Based on the small bit of promo stuff they showed for the new game, it looks like they're tending more towards the Skyward Sword design for the next one as well.

I think I found the trickiest temple in Twilight Princess to be that one in the city up in the clouds. I'm having trouble remembering though. :P

I played Skyward Sword before Twilight Princess, which made the switch just too difficult. I thought the graphics and game play were ridiculous compared to Skyward Sword, so I played Twilight Princess for all of maybe an hour before giving up. It actually hurt my eyes to look at it and it was super frustrating trying to adjust to the controls.

I miss Guild Wars... never played most of the others. I played the original Warcraft, though, which was pretty awesome at the time. lol

I played them in the same order, actually. We never had a Gamecube, and only got a Wii a couple years ago, so I had to catch up.

The Skyward Sword controls were definitely more fluent. The main reason for that is that they designed Twilight Princess specifically for the Gamecube, and the Wii version was basically just ported. Skyward Sword was specifically designed to use the nunchuk mechanics.

I didn't find it bad enough to stop playing, but it was a bit frustrating sometimes. The Skyward Sword controls have their downsides too, but generally they work really well.

Same! The last game console I had before the Wii was a Nintendo64, and that was back in the early 2000s. I didn't get a Wii until just before Christmas 2011 and I bought Skyward Sword at the same time. I didn't even know Twilight Princess existed until I was well into Skyward Sword. I still never finished Skyward Sword, though, since I cut back on my (already very minimal) video game playing.

Good to know that they weren't just really way off the mark with Twilight Princess; I might try it again with that in mind. That they ported it over from Gamecube makes the whole thing a more easily forgivable offense. lol
