PhuturePriest
Strictly speaking, that should be jūjutsu. :| Yeah, pretty much. I have been working with this kid for a good ten years now, give or take. Maybe I just see him too much. :smile3: But yeah, even worse than the McDojo is those people who think that getting a black belt turns them into some kind of mystical Asian warrior monk and the bearer of secret martial wisdom. Luckily I do not personally know anyone like that, but they typically are not hard to find. :lol4: Of course. Haha. Working with people for ten years is sometimes way, way too much. I personally know some people that I don't want to work with for ten minutes. :P Are you saying I have not automatically transformed into the most wise and at-peace person in the world? But yeah, those people are just the best. I know a black belt who fits that bill pretty well.
PhuturePriest
Nice image, but my uniform is all black, and it can be sleeveless, if I choose to go with that. The sleeveless looks pretty awesome.
Chestertonian
Congrats! It is that time of year now, eh? :smile3: I am being promoted to sandan in a couple weeks. Cool! Are you in TaeKwonDo?I'm an e don in Tang Soo Do

Speaking of which, if you ever want a laugh you should check out the Youtube channel for Charm City Karate. It is delightfully ridiculous. The guy is a complete goofball. He posted a bit on the Reddit karate forum, but he found out pretty quickly that we were not buying his junk. This one is my particular favourite: http://youtu.be/wdv28DHiFNA

He did not like when we explained how the fluid properties of air were what caused the candle to go out, not the raw power of his punch. :| And also how pulling back his punch did not make it more powerful. PhuturePriest
Shotokan-ryu karate. :) My club is broadly affiliated with Masami Tsuruoka-sensei, who is generally recognized as the "father of Canadian karate". Shotokan! I mixed it up with Shinkai, which is what Ken Routon (The guy I mentioned in the opening post) does. As long as it isn't a McDojo and he doesn't make you do candle drills, I greatly respect this Masami Tsuruoka.

Wait, he didn't know that? I had to do candle drills once when I was around eight, and I figured out even at that time it was the air and not the punch. He comes over here for a clinic every year or so, unfortunately not this year, so I have been able to work with him a few times now. Really smart guy, and really friendly. Always learn a ton from him. Wait, he didn't know that? I had to do candle drills once when I was around eight, and I figured out even at that time it was the air and not the punch. Well he was under the impression that his punch was so powerful that it pushed the air and blew out the candle. Not really. The punch really does not have anything to do with the equation; you could do the same thing in a million different ways.

I love those guys you meet where no matter how much you work with them, they always have more fun stuff to show you. I've blown out a candle by accidentally breathing within five feet of it. Punching out a flame is nothing special.
