First Days On The New Job

So I have been to work twice now at the crisis pregnancy organization, and I must say, it's shaping up to be a very good job so far.

I am working with the TLC Options for Women as their social media and communications coordinator. I went to some training last night, the first night of a 4 part series where they teach their volunteers how to do counseling with women who are thinking about getting an abortion. Obviously this is a good idea for me too because even though I am highly unlikely to ever be placed doing face-to-face counseling for obvious reasons (basically, I'm white and male) , I will probably be helping do some on-call stuff at night when they don't have anyone to staff the hotline.

Today I actually went to the office for the first time, and got to meet the people who work there. They're all really good people, but the lady they have doing all the financial stuff seemed pretty shy, so I didn't get to talk to her a whole lot. I plan on changing that. :) But the executive director and the marketing guy are both really nice also.

The office is located in an old convent, which is actually still used as a convent, but just doesn't have a gazillion nuns in it anymore. It just has a few. I *think* they might be some kind of Dominicans, because they teach in the gradeschool and high school there. And they wear black and white habits. I'll have to look closer some time, or ask them when they are not in the middle of teaching little kids their phonics lessons. :P

The building is also shared by a daycare, where the kiddos of some of the teachers and staff hang out. They're good kids, and are just down the hall from us. The director of the daycare kept saying she was sorry they make noise and get in the way, but I found work to be quieter than being at home despite the fact they there were toddlers all over the place. They were way more quiet than Patrick and Bella are at home. :hehe:

There are also other places in the building used by the parish. They have a kitchen and such, and they also have a workshop in the basement where they make hosts. Yes, the parish, St. Agnes, does in fact still make their own hosts. 3 older ladies were there running the host presses and cutters when I got there. It was super cool.

Will you have the option of going to daily Mass, since the church is right next door?

Thats my parish!

I also attended that high school so I know that building well.

And yes the nuns make the hosts still hehe

I recall a day in 8th grade when we got to watch them do it for a little bit.

Yeah, especially since they have mass 3 times a day on weekdays. Of course I'm only in the office one day a week there, the rest I work remotely.

That is really cool. I hope I have the opportunity to get to daily Mass when I start my career, whatever it might be. :smile3:

My dd and I were driving up to St. Agnes a few weeks ago. When we witnessed gunshots at the bus in front of us, we decided that maybe we were not in the mood to be in Frogtown after dark.

It is a beautiful parish, though.

We like to call it our diamond in the rough

I sing in the Renaissance Polyphony choir there every first Saturday of the month during the school year. You guys should come because we are pretty cool beans if I do say so myself.

All y'all 'mericans are lucky. Whenever I am in the US, I notice the same thing; the average parish is way nicer than the average parish in Calgary. (I do not know whether or not this holds true in the rest of Canada.)
