Tech-challenged Needs Tablet Advice

Gabriela

Recommended Posts

I need a tablet mostly for connecting to the internet to download academic articles in PDF, and to read the articles and annotate them in a PDF reader. It wouldn't hurt to have other "academic-y" apps on it, like one for making notes and keeping a calendar with reminders, email, address book, and such.

I'd prefer an Android device, as I'm sick of Apple limiting everything I do (and charging me extra for it).

Can anyone recommend a good device? I'm wondering if maybe an e-reader would be sufficient for me, but I don't understand all these newfangled thingamajigs... It is REALLY important that I be able to download, annotate in PDF, take notes on a pop-up keyboard, read email, and keep a calendar in the thing.

I heard the google nexus series is pretty good. ASUS has a couple good ones too.

The consensus seems to be that Samsung is the way to go for Android. I've owned a Samsung Galaxy Tab and loved it.

Can these do all the things I need? If I go to a Best Buy do they carry these things (so I can play with some)? I don't shop hardly at all and I haven't been in a Best Buy in... uh... a really, really long time.

The very very best ones for business-y stuff are probably the Windows Surface, but they are also quite expensive. I think they start at $1000, or at least around there. The Samsung devices are quite good if you do not quite need everything the Surface does. My family has a Galaxy Tab as well, and it works quite well. Although I do not really use it for much, myself.

Any Android tablet should be able to do all those things, and yes, you can play with them in a Best Buy.

The only thing I am unsure about is annotating a PDF, I would need to research if there is a good application for that, but I suspect there is one.

For brands, Samsung, ASUS, and Nexus are all quite good and reputable. If you plan to do a lot of handwriting look into a Samsung Galaxy Note, otherwise everything else will be the same for your uses. Bluetooth is handy, and some of the tablets come with a keyboard you could slide on and off the tablet. Depending on what you need.

I don't know technical specs and such, but I'd recommend a Samsung galaxy tab. I can do everything I need for class, write papers and play the occasional game and listen to music
