Has anyone successfully CLEPped any college credits? I'm specifically looking at the Spanish one. Thanks for any info.

Yes. If you get a high enough score on the Chemistry CLEP, you get the full 8 hours of credit. At TAMU the test was around $120, which is definitely worth it. You will probably get 4 hours of credit for the Spanish CLEP.

He is Risen!

I clepped out of about half of my gen. eds.  I didn't know about CLEP testing my first year and took some 101s and found it to be a total waste of time sitting in English learning what nouns and verbs were.  Because of testing out of those kinds of classes, I was able to free up time and money to take classes that looked more interesting.  There are CLEP specific study guides available and the questions in the guides were almost verbatim the questions on the tests, sometimes even the exact same questions.  I forget where the guides came from but a friend had them and we passed them around.

My husband has taken a few CLEP tests and got credit for them. I'm not sure which ones or how many, though, so I guess I'm not really much help...

I didn't even know about these. This would have saved me much time, money, and frustration.  I just glanced at the site and saw a dozen or so tests I could have most certainly passed with a little studying, including some that I chose not to take (like French) because I didn't need them, but they'd sure look good on my transcript.

I didn't know about them, either. I was so horribly under-guided going into college that just about everything I could have done wrong, I did.

And yet, it all turned out ok. :-)

jeffboom, you went to TAMU? So did I...

The Spanish test actually allows you to earn either 6 or 12 credits, depending on your score. So, that would be amesome sauce for my daughter.

When I went to college, I took a test at the university and I was able to test out of 14 credits of Spanish. That was always an advantage for me, since I could register ahead of my classmates. I don't think it was the actual CLEP though-- just a test given by the university.

ETA: I did have to take the next Spanish class and get a grade of C or better in order for those 14 credits to apply, though. I think that's different than CLEP, where they just apply automatically.

There should be an office that would provide you with information about CLEPing. I took a lot (10 to be exact) of AP courses in HS and my college accepted them so I haven't needed to CLEP out of any classes. The office that handles my independent degree program is also the same office that handles CLEPS so I have learned a little bit.

I'm thinking about doing the CLEP for Human Anatomy & Physiology I.  I'm not sure about II since it is more of intensive study.  I really wish that I was able to CLEP out of the computer classes.  I feel I wasted too much time in computer classes when I know a lot about MS Office already.  Fortunately, I'm done except for Medical Office Procedures.

I"d say about 75% of people going to college are under-guided. Granted, there's a lot to learn, and everybody's situation is different, but there ought to be a better way to get the necessary information to the right people. That way, people would get the education they need without so much expense, frustration, and wasted time.

High school counselors do such a crummy job (for a lot of reasons - they're over-worked, under-funded, don't really know the kids, etc. - I'm not blaming them personally )...You think folks could make a living as private college counselors?

Yeah, dude, those have been around for years. They make tons of money cuz all the UMC WASPs send their kids to them.

I know what a WASP is, but I don't know what a UMC is. Clearly I'm not one of their kids because I never heard of private college counselors. But at least I now know there's a need for them.
