If doing a historical search, schizophrenia was called dementia praecox. They basically thought it was a form of dementia that hit the young.

Was it ever confused with demonic possession? I can't remember remember if I actually read this somewhere or if I made it up.

Couldn't those Africans be happy with the traditional Mass? It seem to work for some africans and some of the chinese. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PImOqOwr9Po

How much should religion (and Liturgy) adopt to a specific culture?

It's circumstantial evidience, but I nearly always see a few African-Americans at Latin Masses (at least in urban areas) and I don't get the feeling they just wandered in. My previous parish was very traditional and run by the Dominicans, and we had a fair number of black parishioners.

There is a Zaire Rite that's an adaptation of the Roman Rite. It's no easy feat to create a new rite, but there is by all means precedent for it. But I think a lot of small things can be done within the Roman Rite, especially to accentuate the role of music and song in our worship. Just because white people want to be done in 55 minutes doesn't mean they have to kill the fun for everyone else :)

Just from experience working with people who have schizophrenia (and schizoaffective), I would say yes. I know a few who either think they're God or that God talks to them. Some things they say can easily be taken as blasphemous. I don't want to dwell on this as it's rather horrifying and disgusting for me to think about, but these patients would likely be put to death if they were born during such a time period.

Catherine, can you recommend books on the history of psychosis in this context (societal)?

Of course. It still is at times. My husband has been offered exorcism more than once.

Not really books. Most historical studies are about a snipet of an illness or historical treatment and done for journals. The best ones are probably the Journal of the History of Behavioral Sciences, History of Psychiatry, and Anthropology and Medicine. At least in English. There's lots more stuff in French and German.

Schizophrenia has been around for centuries. My husband has it, his mom has it, his great grandmother had it in Victorian London. She spent the last 20 years of her life in Bedlam. The man in Luke 8 living in the cemetary was probably one of my husband's ancestors.

I think of this every time the subject of how far back mental illness goes is brought up, as well as when people tie mental illness to cases of possession.

There are such things as culture bound syndromes (fan death and Wendigo psychosis for example) but I have never ever heard of bipolar disorder being classified as culture-bound.

Also, just about the worst place you can look for such information is YouTube (or most places easily accessible on the internet. Any idiot can post on the internet saying whatever they like. Peer review exists for a reason.

Of course! BUt you can also find serious videos and articles. You can even find stupid people at the Vatican!

Pax, not Paxil!

There is no such thing as mental illness. It is not a medical disease. It is stress on the soul, or Holy Spirited or demonic possession.

Dr. Scott M Peck, MD wrote about demonic possession. "People of the Lie" and "Glimpses of the Devil".

I'm an advocate for the modern day lepers or what secular society calls "mentally ill".

Schizophrenic people are my favorite. They know more about God than most ordained. They are not evil. Most of them are afraid of you.

Did you know "religious pre-occupation" is a symptom of mental illness?

Evidence?

The abbreviation "BPD" is Borderline Personality Disorder, not Bipolar. Either the OP used the wrong abbreviation but meant Bipolar or really was referring to BPD.

:bravo:  BPD stands for Borderline Personality Disorder!

How to create an African version of Gregorian chant that is not Coptic or Ethiopian? Zaire use?

Our parish has an Eritian rite service on Sunday afternoon. I forget what they call it, but it is hardcore.

*drool* If you ever go or have been, please tell me everything about it!  I didn't even know there was an Eritrean one in communion with Rome!

I'm not sure... I expect the Congregration for Divine Worship would be involved, but on the local level the diocese usually has someone in charge of liturgy who would probably be the first person to talk to.
