CatholicsAreKewl
Is it possible for the Church in modern times to goof up on this and wrongly canonize someone? I remember there was controversy about a saint that may have never existed (St. Christopher?).
Quid Est Veritas?
Since theologians including St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Robert Belarmine hold that a declaration of canonization is an excercise of papal infallability, I would say that it would be highly improbable for the Church to goof up. Also, I'm curious, I never heard that about St. Christopher. Who thinks he didn't exist?
CatholicsAreKewl
http://www.catholic.com/quickquestions/did-the-church-declare-that-st-christopher-is-a-myth I found my answer. It doesn't matter if he existed or not because he wasn't canonized.
Basilisa Marie
Well, the canonization process as we know it today is a fairly recent "innovation" in church history, and I think it's safe to say that it's impossible for someone who isn't a saint to get through it. You need miracles, and you need experts to verify them. It's hard stuff. :)
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
As far as i'm aware st christopher didn't get un canonized, he just doesn't have a feast day any more on the ordinary calender. Edited May 3, 2013 by Tab'le Du'Bah-Rye
