Making ends meet.... Job 1 pays well, but is a once-a-week deal. Job 2 pays ok, and I can choose my hours. Not saving anything, but that should change when I finish school. (hopefully!!!)

I'm married. That's my vocation.

I work part time, bussing tables. That's my occupation.

I'm a writer. Sadly, that's my obsession.

My husband is in the Air Force and I work from home as a freelance writer. We're making enough to squeak by and put a little in savings, but things are pretty tight. I don't think we could manage without my small income. The military does NOT pay families nearly enough. Most enlisted families I know rely on food stamps and WIC.

Can I just say one thing? I mean this in no way personally towards anybody here. It's just something I need to get off my chest.

I loathe this question. It seems like I've been asked this a hundred times a day, every day, since forever. I'm 27 years old, without a degree, who waits tables because all my primary talents are artistic. This does not mean I have no future. And I know no one here is saying that. But, dear God, society seems to think I don't.

So, for the record, world? It's not that I have no degree because I'm lazy. It's because I've gotten married and moved to three different states in as many years. I don't exactly make money from my theater work or writing right now. So, kindly stop asking. And yes, this is my way of saying I won't be picking up the phone next time you call. Unless it's about student loans or anything else you think you can hold over me. In which case, I'll answer. But no, we can't be friends anymore.

It reminds me of this from the play Harvey.

The Taxi Driver: ...I've been driving this route for 15 years. I've brought 'em out here to get that stuff, and I've drove 'em home after they had it. It changes them... On the way out here, they sit back and enjoy the ride. They talk to me; sometimes we stop and watch the sunsets, and look at the birds flyin'. Sometimes we stop and watch the birds when there ain't no birds. And look at the sunsets when its raining. We have a swell time. And I always get a big tip. But afterwards, oh oh...

Veta Louise Simmons: "Afterwards, oh oh"? What do you mean, "afterwards, oh oh"?

The Taxi Driver: They crab, crab, crab. They yell at me. Watch the lights. Watch the brakes, Watch the intersections. They scream at me to hurry. They got no faith in me, or my buggy. Yet, it's the same cab, the same driver. and we're going back over the very same road. It's no fun. And no tips... After this he'll be a perfectly normal human being. And you know what stinkers they are!

Sorry about the rant.

I've had work study positions with varying levels of compensation through college and grad school, but will soon be living off of loans, my parent's generosity and the meager work-study I can cut for myself at the library or the gym when I start medical school in july.

So no, absolutely I can haz no employmentz..... Yet :D

Guest Allie

This year I have worked full time with benefits for the first time and have been able to save half my salary.  I add to income by buying and selling antiques and have had a few commissions (starving artist is what I usually am) which basically helps me buy more art supplies.  I also do some costume design and seamstress stuff for a theatre and that brings in a little extra.

I'm at school full-time. I work part-time for a couple of hours five days a week. It's the most work I've ever had, and I feel so blessed.
My pay's quite little but I don't feel I need a huge wage, and it's enough so that I can help my parents out with paying for groceries or giving my siblings money when they need it.
