I have always heard that the brown reculse is small spider? Besides, God created and said it was good, so then too, are the brown reculse. I'm sure they eat pests and bugs around you house. Also< i live in Arizona, so I always check my shoes and bed for spiders or scorpians(sp?). There are several things you can do to keep the pests a way that are natural. Such as, did you know that the mint leaf repels ants?

I thought brown recluse were pretty good sized spiders, not huge but not small.... if you go to brownrecluse.com you can see pictures of them and what their bites can turn into if not treated, but for the faint of heart and/or stomach, don't go there! It wasl almost too much for me... ew.

Ash Wednesday

Giving a heads up here!

From snopes.com regarding the spider bite photos that you see on brownrecluse.com, the ones that show the bony hand -- they have been circulating the internet for some time but it can't be verified that they are authentic:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Origins:   Whether these photographs actually depict the effects of a brown recluse spider bite is difficult to determine. The accompanying text provides no useful identifying information, such as where the putative victim lives or where he was bitten, whether he obtained a diagnosis of his wound from a doctor, whether he sought medical treatment, etc. Various accounts place these pictures as having originated in Missouri, Wisconsin, or California; knowing the locale is important in verifying the authenticity of this account because, for example, brown recluse spiders do not live in California.

Even if these photographs are genuine, they create an exaggerated sense of the danger posed by brown recluse spiders. As Phillip Anderson, a Missouri physician who specializes in brown recluse spider bites, explained in an article for the medical journal Missouri Medicine, "Almost all brown recluse spider bites heal nicely in two to three months without medical treatment at all. Also the long-term medical outcome is excellent without treatment." Furthermore, says Anderson, "We are not aware of any verifiable deaths caused by the bite of the North American brown recluse spider." (He noted that several deaths from such wounds "had been reported in medical journals, but none of the reports is convincing.") He also reported that out of "about 1,000 credible recluse spider bites," he was only aware of "about a dozen cases of impressive, sustained hemolysis."

In fact, just about the greatest danger of a bite of this nature is not the direct effects of the venom, but rather the introduction of secondary bacterial infection due to the patient's continually scratching the site (spider bites can itch terribly!) or otherwise failing to keep the wound clean.
If these photographs truly depict the effects of a brown recluse spider bite, they represent a very rare occurrence. Quite possibly they are genuine photographs of some completely different medical ailment (unrelated to spider bites) with similar physical symptoms (such as pyoderma gangrenosum or necrotizing fasciitis), and someone who came across the pictures outside of their original context mistakenly assumed them to depict the effects of a brown recluse spider bite.

The link above has a more realistic image of recluse bites, at their worst (kinda gross, but not as bad as what circulates online). Generally it's secondary infections that are the problem.

I'm glad your sister's ok!

P.S. Spiders are so gross.

Thanks for the article Ash. I think the pictures at brownrecluse.com DID say that the pictures they had were of a guy who had gotten a secondary infection and hadn't gotten it taken care of right away. I took it as "take care of it or it can get this bad or worse" not "if you get bitten this WILL happen." I've seen other pictures like those shown on both sites, a kid my friend knows had the kind of decay/infection shown on the snopes picture.

I know a bit. I don't have time to read the posts, so I am unsure what has been said or if it was even a BR that bite her, but here goes.

I camp in an area where BRs are common and I cave in a cave they are knew to like the entry of. The bite is much like an ucler on the flesh. That is the best way to describe it. Acid eating away the flesh. Unless it goes untreated you should be okay. I assume you went to a doctor.

All I know is what my teacher and camp leader told the guys at the camp fire about using the head...
Guys, listen up! When you go to the bathroom take a stick. Lift the seat and hit around with the stick a bit. Cause if it bites you there... no matter how much viagra you take it will never work again!
None of the guys went to the bathroom for the 4 days we were there, LOL!
It's so cute. I heard they're really affectionate littleflower, they make great pets. :P
Yeah, I love my pet Brown Recluse spider, but not as much as I love my pet Black Widow. I keep them in a cage with my tapeworm, scorpian, cobra, and jellyfish. I kiss them all before I go to bed, and I especially like to cuddle with the spiders.

God bless,

Jennifer
PS: Not-so-fun fact. The average person who lives a full life will swallow about 8 spiders in the sleep.
Are you serious? :o
