Guest Allie
It really helped me to watch (and pray with) this service. Cardinal O'Malley gave me a new and deeper understanding of Community. The whole thing was beautiful. ToJesusMyHeart
I'm a little bit confused as to why they let Obama speak..... Someone charitable, please explain why this is okay. Friends of mine compare it to letting Hitler or another Nazi speak in a Jewish synagogue. Obama is persecuting the Catholic Church. Why is he welcome to speak in one? 4588686
I'm a little bit confused as to why they let Obama speak...... Because he's the President of the country in which the attack occurred? Someone charitable, please explain why this is okay. Friends of mine compare it to letting Hitler or another Nazi speak in a Jewish synagogue. Obama is persecuting the Catholic Church. Why is he welcome to speak in one? I knew a holocaust survivor who would have slapped the stupid out of your friend if she heard her make such an offensive comparison. She's dead now but she was a tough bird well into her 80's and 90's. Maybe that's why she was able to survive that place where the Nazis put people who frequented synagogues. What's that place called? Oh yeah, a death camp. That's what the Nazis did to Jews. They put them in death camps. Which I guess is a lot like requiring religiously affiliated hospitals to provide insurance plans that cover contraceptives to their secular employees. krissylou
Cardinal O'Malley is a cardinal archbishop, was reputedly on the "short list" for pope last month, has been recently appointed to what seems to be a "cabinet" for the new pope. So he's pretty well respected. Also, he is particularly strong on pro-life issues. Several months ago, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who is the head of the USCCB and has been leading the charge re: the HHS mandate, invited President Obama to the Al Smith dinner. So they have credentials that seem to be pretty impeccable. And they are engaging with President Obama in ways they consider appropriate. So that may be a sign that there's space for a fair amount of nuance in such matters.
ToJesusMyHeart
Thank you krissylou. I trust Cardinal O'Malley and Cardinal Dolan, but it is just odd at first when considering the stance the president takes on things [faithful] Catholics don't budge on. Namely, abortion and contraception.
