Shoes: Where Do You Draw The Line?

Do you take off your shoes at someone's house? Etc.

Go.

I used to, but our carpet is so old it is not a big deal to me if people prefer to leave them on. (My parents and inlaws prefer to leave them on, and they are our most common guests.)

I have no problem removing my shoes at other people's houses-- and around here, that's pretty much standard.

Canadians normally take shoes off in someone's house, their own or someone else's. Very occasionally there are times where leaving shoes on is normal, for instance if it is in the summer and half the guests are on the deck and half are inside, something like that. But even then lots of people would still take shoes off. (Edit: And you would not leave your shoes on unless the host specifically told you it was ok.)

It is kind of weird for me, as a Canadian, to be down in the US where people often leave their shoes on inside.  :smile3: Takes a lot of getting used to.

Some people have specific indoor shoes at their own house.

Weirded me out when I came to Canada. I used to take them off, but carry them around out of fear they'd get stolen. People can leave them on in our house because we have fiberfloors. You can't hurt them.

Shoes off in the house. My kid is face planting on that floor (and probably licking it while he's down there). I don't need all the nasties on your shoes all over that floor! That said, I am fine with people having "inside shoes" on. My Mom has always had shoes that she wore inside, and having a background in physical therapy, I totally understand (and encourage) some people needing to have shoes on all the time. And if the case is that you need to have your shoes on, and you don't have inside shoes, I will tolerate it, but I won't be happy about it. Mostly irritating is that my grandparents never BRING their inside shoes along, but would have a hissy fit if we wore our outside shoes in their house.

In most cases, I can't bring myself to leave my shoes on in other people's houses. Maybe if I'm wearing sandals or it's hard flooring, but athletic shoes on carpet? Nope. I can't do it. It just feels too wrong.

I take my shoes off inside, but don't require it of guests.  If a guests tracks in dirt, I just pull out the broom or vacuum.  My place isn't large, so it's not too much of a bother.

When I'm the visitor, it depends on the condition of the floor.  I really hate stepping on crunchy or sticky things with socks or bare feet.
