MarysLittleFlower
Do you have any ideas on an alternative to a veil? Whenever I go to the Latin Mass, I wear my veil. But at my home parish, this is not really done and I still haven't found the courage to wear it. When I am not able to go to the Latin Mass and go to my home parish, I'm not really sure what to wear for headcoverings, - in the winter I wore a hat, but what about in the summer? I was wondering if anyone does this too and has any ideas :) like creative ways to tie a scarf, etc. thanks! :)
fides quarens intellectum
http://www.tznius.com/cgi-bin/tying.pl The above site has instructions on tying scarves. I either where a scarf or a knit snood. And, as for courage, don't worry about what is done and what isn't really done - do what you think you should, and don't get caught up in who is doing what at which parish. :)
ChristinaTherese
The first time I covered my head at Mass was at a parish where nobody did. (I figured I just had to screw up my courage and do it already, and we happened to be visiting a parish that... was... not exactly what we would have preferentially chosen. I don't really remember much except that we couldn't figure out where the tabernacle was except that it might have been hidden in the sacristy. But that has absolutely no bearing.) I wore a scarf for the first while, just a nice wide scarf that fell down my head easily. You can find scarves that should be easy to wear that way here: http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/VelleMere/1/1/51243// I don't know how warm they might make you in the summer, but the (normal) veil I bought from there is really light and shouldn't be a problem at all in the summer. (Not even if I wear it as a shawl, which I've been doing.) Also, I've noticed more veils around once I've started to wear one. So, maybe, you'll start out alone but more will join you later. ChristinaTherese
Oh, and as far as what I wear, it has varied from a kind of bandanna (but I can't get most to look decent on my head for the life of me, and I made too many holes in that one by way of tying it), a homemade veil that I kept feeling self-consciously that it probably only helped people mistake me for a nun, a scarf that was conveniently/awkwardly like a nun's veil the way I wore it (and it was a bit hot in the summer), to a crocheted mantilla from the store I linked to above. elizabeth09
When I enter mass, rather English or Latin Mass I have two veils: a black for advent, lent, and funeral/memorable mass, and white for the other times. No one realy ask me about it yet, and it been almost 3 years now.?

Here (below) is a GREAT quality store for snoods. This shop owned and operated by a young (20-something) stay-at-home Catholic mother of 3. Her husband is in law school right now and thus has no income...this is how they pay the bills so please consider purchasing a snood or other head-covering (she has headbands and other coverings too!). :) http://www.etsy.com/shop/asnoodforallseasons
dominicansoul
I started veiling a few years back...it takes a bit of guts...but after a while, it becomes second nature a little elderly man started passing mantillas out at Mass, now several more women wear them! I also attend Mass at the University parish of the school I work at, and lo and behold, college girls wear teh mantilla! So happy its making a comeback! Don't be afraid, just wear it :)

ToJesusMyHeart
She does great needle-work! :) I've only purchased one head-covering from her, but it is top of the line quality.
Papist
I say forget the alternative and wear the veil.
DiscerningCatholic
You could start off with a scarf or something similar to get people used to you covering your head and then switch to a veil. :)

Lil Red
p.s. the Bible doesn't say an actual "veil" but a headcovering. so it can be anything you choose, really :)
AnneLine
Oh good grief -- I just realized I posted my reply in the wrong thread! (and no wonder, as there is a bit of an overlap between threads!) Old, covered, and VERY immodest use of egret feathers. Women were actually required BY LAW to remove these in movie theaters in San Francisco, because no one could see the screen. I wonder if this is why the 'chapel veils' were started? Because the hats were inappropriate for Church since they were distracting? Edited April 29, 2013 by AnneLine

Because the hats were inappropriate for Church since they were distracting? Not surprised if that's the case. That hat would be very distracting :P It seems to me (at least where I live) that people veil depending on their parish community. I've only ever seen one elderly woman veil at the Sunday Masses I go to. At my university's church it's different. The community there seems to be more conservative and traditional and there are more women wearing hats and veils. Last year (or maybe the year before, even) I was hoping to buy or make a mantilla, but unfortunately never got round to it. A couple of days ago I actually found some lace I'd bought for the project. Might be time to get the sewing machine out :)
