Please help persecuted priest! April 12, 2013

A local priest suggested I blog on this topic. I thank the good father for the link.

Fr. Greg Shaffer, chaplain of the Newman Center at George Washington University, is being threatened by a small group of gay activists, after he had the temerity to defend the Church’s belief regarding marriage. These student activists are also apparently appaled that Fr. Shaffer, of all things, opposes abortion!  How can it be?!?  And does this represent a departure in belief from other Newman Center chaplains?  I pray not.

But to the main point, Fr. Shaffer is being heavily persecuted, and there is a campaign to have a priest, who is doing nothing more than defending what the Church has believed for 2000 years, removed from his position as chaplain.  Given the cowardliness of the heavily left-wing administration at most universities, this is hardly an idle threat.  There is a good chance Fr. Shaffer could be removed.  At the very height of audacity, the 12 (twelve!) students so outraged by his exposition of constant Church belief, have even held a “prayer vigil” against Fr. Shaffer’s presence. To whom were they praying, one must wonder?

Look, look at the terrible moral outrages Fr. Shaffer is exposing his students to:

The students complain that Fr. Greg Shaffer has spoken out against gay “marriage” and abortion, and has counseled homosexual Catholic students to embrace celibacy. They said they were disturbed when Fr. Shaffer quoted the Book of Romans and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The horror!  How dare a priest of Holy Mother Church expose the souls in his care to Catholic belief!  It is unthinkable.

At root of all this, is one very confused and lost young man:

One of the two students, Damian Legacy, says he spent a large portion of his free time at the Newman Center during his freshman year at the university, including serving at Mass, and that he had hoped to become a priest. However, Fr. Shaffer reportedly disapproved when he found out that Legacy was in a relationship with another male student, and that he and Bergen were both running for offices with the gay rights organization Allied in Pride.

“To have my faith leader view me that way, just because of one piece of the way that God made me, and to think that one part is responsible for the destruction of my human dignity, it just didn’t, I can’t even begin to describe the mental conflict that it creates,” Legacy said.

….. Legacy has since been ordained in the North American Old Catholic Church, which encourages homosexuals to become clergy.

Who said anything about the destruction of your human dignity?  All souls have human dignity, but that is no excuse for sin.  But that is what this very noxious homosexual rights movement has done, it has constantly confused sin with virtue, activity with identiy, action with endemic characteristics like race. But, most of all, what this young man wants, so very lost (and thank God for Fr. Shaffer counseling against his becoming a priest.  And how, by the way, can he be “ordained”, if he hasn’t even completed his senior year of college, yet?  The Old Catholic church must have some pretty loose standards), is to be confirmed in his sin, to be told that moral depravity is in fact virtue.  That is what those lost in sin have always desired, to be told that it’s OK, go ahead, keep doing what you’re doing.  But no matter what human voice tells them that, no matter if they even find lost shepherds of Holy Mother Church to pretend that their unnatural vice is a blessed thing, nothing will change God’s judgment.  Which we will all, including “Damian Legacy,” face.  Lying to people, telling them what they want to hear, confirming them in their sin, is no charity. It is a monstrous lie, a lie suffused with the stench of sulfur and brimstone.

And do note, for the 10 millionth time, how the “tolerance” crowd is only tolerant of their own kind, and, much like the Soviet communists I’ve been reading about of late, seek to crush and destroy all those who don’t share their particular brand of “tolerance.” The direction in which the dominant cultural group-think is heading is truly frightening. And yet, God remains, Truth…….remains.

What to do?  Well, first of all, pray. Pray for Fr. Shaffer and that Our Lord may protect and guide him. Pray for the conversion of those persecuting him.  Next, you might, in your charity, consider signing this petition, which already has almost 9,000 signatures, stating that you support Fr. Shaffer’s defense of the Faith and the Church’s belief.  It is a small act, but small acts taken by many can have great significance.

There will be much more of this to come, I fear.

he was my chaplain at GW ... not a mean bone in his body. Zealous, faithful and orthodox inspiration to students there.
