Personally, I avoid wearing khakis with ties. I would prefer to ever so slightly dress down a pair of khakis, and I prefer to dress up the tie. Either with a vest at the minimum, or preferably with a matched suit.

For khakis, again for me specifically, I would pick a more casual blazer or sport coat, but I would probably forego the tie.

If I am wearing a tie, I usually pair it with a suit, but if I want to go slightly more casual I will do a good pair of business-casual slacks with a sweater or sweater vest. I suppose there is some overlap between my preferences, but at the same time I do not have unlimited resources to try out all possible styles, so I have to make a few judgement calls based on what appeals to me.

Yeah, you should really just give up on the khaki dream. :P I'd like to go with the suit so I look better and more impressive for Kate.

This suit is nice. Even though a light color is not always the done thing for the evening, since it's summer, you might be able to get away with it. I really like the idea of taupe colored trousers (pleated, not plain front. Yes, I know plain front is more fashionable, but pleated is dressier and much more mature and you won't look underweight if they're made right.), a navy blue blazer (double breasted with shiny buttons), and an ecru shirt. Whether you wear a tie is up to your discretion. If you do, I would suggest a strong but summery color like green, possibly with red accents in it. If you are extremely bold and daring, a cravat could look quite nice.
Here are some examples of "nice clothes".

Thanks for the advice. These all look really nice, but I forgot to mention there is a budget. The jacket itself exceeds it, and I need more than a jacket. :P

If you're going to buy a suit at your age, don't go dropping hundreds of dollars... really it's not worth it, especially not to impress another teenage girl regardless of how mature you both are. You might consider a sports coat that already matches some dress pants you have rather than forgoing a full brand new suit.

Hundreds of dollars? Where do you people live? My suit will cost about $100 dollars and not much more above that.

I'm going to Emily's sister's wedding on June 1st (Most likely), and since I absolutely refuse to wear the suit I currently have which is way too big for me in front of Kate, I am buying another suit. I'm partial to the traditional black pants, white shirt, black jacket ensemble because I like scaring people since it's not rare for me to have a backpack and I look like a Mormon with it all on, but I'm thinking of perhaps branching out this time.  Any ideas? Black usually looks good on me with my somewhat dark complexion (The photo you see is not accurate at all. My computer screen is super bright so it makes me look way whiter than I am), but I also might look good in Navy.

It sounds like you should just not get in front of Kate.

You're young, so you could get away with the navy sport coat and the khaki pants. It makes you look a bit prep school, but seriously...you're young, you'll look a bit prep school no matter what you wear, imho.

What about a dark grey or a subtle grey pinstripe? Have you thought of a colored button down shirt to go with it? A colored tie?

I honestly don't mind the prep school look, so that doesn't bother me.

Nihil Obstat

If you end up wearing a suit, just make sure you really own it. There is nothing easier to spot than a guy who is not comfortable in a suit; no matter how well it fits, how well it coordinates, how well tied the tie is, you will still just look like a kid playing dress up. :smile3:

I actually like wearing suits and tuxes, and I do it with some regularity, so I will be comfortable in it.

Good. That goes a long way.

It is something I notice at university around the time when all the commerce classes are giving presentations. If I have spare time, I look around trying to pick out which of them hate wearing suits. :smile3:

Let's really belabor this decision. I mean, work it the hell over.

Get your frigging suit tailored.

The end.

You're welcome.

PS: No katanas.

But, it's way too wide. Can they even fix that?

Suits vary in price dude. Anywhere from $100 to several thousand. I was just saying if your going to buy a new suit, get the lower/lowest end suit. It's not even worth it to get middle quality because you'll grow out of it.

I don't know about THEY...

But you'd be AMAZED at what I can do with scissors and thread. I tailored Fr's Cassock for him a couple weeks ago.
