PadrePioOfPietrelcino
Catholics most often start their prayers with "in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirt " making the sign of the cross at the same time. It in itself is a small prayer although it is not necessary to begin every prayer it is customary to call upon the triune nature of God to remind us who we gain our authority to pray from. There are many different ways to end a prayer, The ending is often changed especially during liturgical prayers depending on who we addressed the prayer to in the beginning. Key thing is there is no set proper or required way to start or end the prayer, rather that we are praying is the key. There are also many different TYPES of prayer and they each can be of unique benefit, you may find yourself draw. In a particular way to a particular type and that is ok. It is normal to again make the sign of the cross and say "in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Sprit, Amen" at the end as well. The Catholic concept of prayer also includes prayers to the Saints and the communion of Saints. It is something you don't need to learn about right away, but I personally found that after I did learn about it a wonderful world opened up to me in my praying. I hope this helps and doesn't cause more confusion.
PadrePioOfPietrelcino
I usually pray the Rosary at least once a day as it is a meditation on the life and ministry of Jesus, I also pray spontaneously throughout the day. Lectio Divina is another type of pray where you read and meditate upon the scriptures, and there are the liturgical prayers like the Liturgy of the Hours and the Mass. One of the most powerful little prayers I have found in my life is the simple, "Lord, let your will be done in my life."
dUSt
So I guess that brings up my first question, when you pray how do you address God? In the Mormon church we always addressed Him as "Heavenly Father" in prayer. When you pray do you call Him that? We also ended our prayers with "In the name of Jesus Christ, amen" is that how Catholics end their prayers? Also in your daily life do you tend to say more set prayers like the rosary or do you pray spontaneously? Thanks again everyone. :) The way I usually address God is, "My King, My Lord, my God." I hear another popular way to address Him is "Jesus". The Catholic Church has many, many ways to address Him as well. Here's some: Lord Christ God the Father of Heaven God the Son, Redeemer of the world God the Holy Spirit Holy Trinity, one God Jesus, Son of the living God Jesus, splendor of the Father Jesus, brightness of eternal light. Jesus, King of glory. Jesus, sun of justice. Jesus, Son of the Virgin Mary. Jesus, most amiable. Jesus, most admirable. Jesus, the mighty God. Jesus, Father of the world to come. Jesus, angel of great counsel. Jesus, most powerful. Jesus, most patient. Jesus, most obedient. Jesus, meek and humble of heart. Jesus, lover of chastity. Jesus, lover of us. Jesus, God of peace. Jesus, author of life. Jesus, example of virtues. Jesus, zealous lover of souls. Jesus, our God. Jesus, our refuge. Jesus, father of the poor. Jesus, treasure of the faithful. Jesus, good Shepherd. Jesus, true light. Jesus, eternal wisdom. Jesus, infinite goodness. Jesus, our way and our life. Jesus, joy of Angels. Jesus, King of the Patriarchs. Jesus, Master of the Apostles. Jesus, teacher of the Evangelists. Jesus, strength of Martyrs. Jesus, light of Confessors. Jesus, purity of Virgins. Jesus, crown of Saints. And almost always, after prayer, be it formal or spontaneous (both are awesome!), a Catholic would say, "In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit," while making the sign of the cross. This is not only because of the Trinity, but each time we do that it is also a reminder of our baptism.
ploomf
Thanks for the answers, they help a lot. Very different from what I'm used to but I like it. So I went shopping today and as is usual for me when I go into a bookstore I bought way too many books. :P I found Catholicism for Dummies and Mere Christianity and while I swore that was all I was going to start with I can never resist the siren call of books and so I also ended up with Crossing the Threshold of Hope by Pope John Paul II, The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis, Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict XVI, The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton, and My Life with the Saints by James Martin. This is why my to be read stack is taller than I am (not that that's very hard, I'm pretty short, most things are taller than I am :P). Thanks everyone, I'm going to start reading and I'm sure I'll be back to bug you all as more questions pop up.
Nihil Obstat
Jesus of Nazareth is an excellent set of books. They definitely require some effort to understand, but it really pays off.

PhuturePriest
Very nice to meet you too. :) I'm a little old to be a fetus but I've been told that I'm well on my way to being a crazy cat lady someday. I'm sixteen, so I'm a little too old to be a fetus as well, but everyone makes fun of me because I was born in 1996, so they call me a fetus. And there is nothing wrong with being a crazy cat lady! My sister and I agreed long ago that if neither of us got married we would live in a house together and be crazy old cat people. My one condition was that we were going to have a lion, which she agreed to.
