The Church Should Tell Kids Growing Up That

most of the old testament isn't real stories so they don't turn atheist when they get older and realise it for themselves and feel they were lied to and brain washed...Or when they get older and question if God is loving and kind since He is portrayed as a monster in a lot of the old testament scripture by the jewish people...Even better how about just get rid of the old testament all together and let the jewish people keep it...That would be nice...But of course that would never happen...So how about just some nice honesty to the kids growing up that these stories are just that...Stories...Inspired by God of course...Well in the fact that the person writing it did their *BEST* to conveigh the point God wanted them to make...Although they were human and could of made some mistakes...

Whoa there, hold on.  The Old Testament so too is full of real stories.  They might not be exact historical accounts, but then that doesn't make sense for a book that is supposedly divinely inspired.  If we believe a book is divinely inspired, then it's going to be the book with the most layers of meaning and layer of truth upon truth that's ever been written.  Why would it just be a simple historical or scientific account? That puts a huge limit on what the Bible is and means for us Christians.

Did Noah gather two of every single animal and herd them into an ark with his family and hunker down for 40 days and 40 nights? Maybe, but we don't have any way of historically verifying that.  But know what?  It doesn't matter.  The point of the story isn't that Noah was a real person. The reason why it's in the Bible is because it shows us God's love for humanity, that evil has consequences, and that good and evil affects all of creation (not just us humans!).  THAT is true.  If we were to someday prove that Noah did do that, that'd be icing on the cake.

God is portrayed in human ways because that's how humans understand the world.  God's true being is so far beyond our ability to fully understand Him, that we use human ways of thinking to try to understand, because that's the best we can do.  And God often uses human ways of communicating, because He knows that we're limited.

There's often a misunderstanding in how history is seen. The idea that history is an exact play-by-play is fairly modern. Ancient conception of history was to relay the truth of the matter, but didnt seek to give an exact account as it happened.

I think that some of the stories of the old testament may very well be exact accounts to a degree, like a movie based on a true story. But some are possibly exact too. I was once confronted by a man being beaten half to death outside of my flats by about 8 people, i prayed to GOD rang the police and told them i was going out there and they better hurry up, and than walking down my stairs i was thinking come holy spirit please let them see i mean no violence. And guess what i got out there and there leader confronted me and we exchanged a few loud words, which took the attention of the mob over to me and him and not the man being bashed, than i walked up to the beaten man and set get up follow me, so he did. The odds where almost immposible but GOD prevailed. And i don't doubt GOD could raise a pillar of fire or feed 10,000 jews on manna and random quails, but whether he would i don't know but i believe he could. As far as i'm aware the church does not say it is contrary to faith for us to believe the actual stories or even view them as based on a true story, or only total stories about faith and morals.

JESUS iz LORD

Onward christian souls.

"Blessed are they who have not seen but believe."

By believing that the events in the Bible are not possible, that those things could not have happen, then you are setting yourself up to believe that God has limits when in fact He is LIMITLESS!!! Nothing is impossible where He is concerned. Those things might be hard to believe, but why would those books be approved to be in the Bible for so long if they were false? We need to have faith that there might jusst be an edge of truth to them. The Bible is the Word of God. So would God really lie to us?

I'm confused... firstly the Old Testament is the Word of God too. It's also Scripture, inspired by God. Secondly, God is not a "monster" there :( it just shows how things were before Christ, and shows more about our situation.. there's nothing negative in God, only in sin and in the sinful situation in the world. Also, I believe the stories in the Old Testament are real. I have no reason to think they are not real. And I didn't even grow up Christian. I grew up agnostic and later came to believe they are real.

Just because we have a hard time imagining something doesn't mean it didn't happen. I mean - the miraculous isn't really "ordinary". Most of what we see is ordinary. Why are we surprised if the miraculous is more than ordinary? :)
