ithinkjesusiscool
Pax! A lot of music nowadays are really strange. I would say that black metal is really too much for me although some death metal is ok. Some people even call it satanic music but I'm no expert. I would also have to say that what you hear on the radio is mostly shit. I talked with a Priest who told me that listening rock music is bad for you. This Priest did go too far according to me. He told me that listening to Mozart is alright (which is true). But you have to remember that Mozart wrote his Die Zauberflöte with masonic elements in it. How can that be alright! I even found information that some guy made a dark satanic version of Gregorian chant. I never dared listening to it. Here we could also argue that Hillsong is beautiful music but how good is it in the long run with such possitive music. Don't we need music about our inner darkness! What kind of music is ok and what is to be avoided?
Oremoose
I don't want to be that guy. But as a music lover I will say you should listen to good music and stay away from bad. Now the question is what is good music and what is not. I have a diverse enjoyment of different bands, genres, and styles. I would not consider all Today's Pop as poop or all classical geniuses must listen to. So that question is not an easy answer that I know how to answer. What I do know is...some dead person said, "Music is made to move the Soul." (or something like that). So now ask yourself how do you want to have your soul moved? Personally I listen to rock (and sometimes Rap) to get my adrenaline pumping or as a means to release my anger with out doing anything stupid. then I can easily turn my radio's dial to Christian station and use their, as I affectionately call sappy, praise and worship songs to spring broad me in to a mini-meditation. Now I am not saying I always listen to music with an exact goal in mind. I just listen to music and the way my circumstances are and how i am feeling play into what I do or do not listen to. I probably made no sense so I shall step off of my soap box now. P.S. the moral of this post is go with your gut if it sounds good to you and the message of the song is not horrifically sinful then you should be alright. Quid Est Veritas?
Music about our inner darkness? What do you mean by that? Any inner darkness that we have is due to our corrupted nature and should certainly not be celebrated. That's why rap songs that celebrate the degradation of women, murder, and drug abuse are not good to listen to. On the other hand, the wrong things that men do can make for great art. Examples of this are plays like Hamlet, A Doll's House, and music like Oklahoma! or Pagliacci. What the priest probably mean about listening to rock music being bad for you was that music that appeals excessively to the senses through heavy beats or sensuous lyrics can possibly put you in an unedifying frame of mind. I think that this may be the case for some people at some times, but can't be applied across the board. Like Oremoose said, "How do you want your soul moved?" Also, keep in mind that there is other music besides dark satanic metal, Pop, Classical, Gregorian, and Praise and Worship. Explore different genres, go with your gut, and stay away from music with dirty words and satanic elements. Thus ends the rant. ;)

I guess you're right about the Priest... Alice Cooper said that if people complain about his shows then why would Hamlet be alright. Hamlet is a pretty dark story. Kateri89
I'm a big Coldplay fan myself...as far as secular music goes. Their lyrics tend to be ok. My thoughts on "good" music are that the lyrics be clean and not indicative of sinful behavior. But other than that, the style of music isn't inherently good or bad. Now classical music has no words so unless you have something against the composer I'd say its probably ok.
