The Eastern Catholic Churches refer to those Churches that developed in the eastern half of the Roman Empire, including those communities that derived from them, and are in communion with Rome. They are characterized by a rich heritage with Apostolic origin, and are treasured by the universal Church. Therefore they have their own canon law and discipline, hierarchical structure and administration of the sacraments. The Congregation is that "department" of the Roman Curia that oversees that which pertains to the life of these churches in Communion with the See of Peter and the wish of the Holy See that the special characteristics of the Eastern Catholic Churches not be subsumed into the wider and more numerous Western Rite
