Slappo
Thoughts anyone? I'm on Windows 7. I'm kind of wondering if I should just wait until the next OS comes out before I ever buy a new computer. Or switch to linux.. but that's not particularly enticing to me with how little I use my home comp.
Roamin Catholic
I'd just put windows 7 on any new computer.
eagle_eye222001
There's little reason to get 8 other than the "cool" factor. I have a copy but haven't installed it yet as I'm intending to put it on a new computer this summer. I have a friend who has it and he likes it, but he's real techie and into that....so there you go. Probably for what you are doing, windows 7 will suffice and you should just wait until a much clearer reason comes to upgrade. Until then, stick to what works. Not The Philosopher
Windows 8 makes no sense.
Apotheoun
I am satisfied with Windows 7, and see no reason to upgrade to 8.
Nihil Obstat
From what I have heard from my tech salesman colleagues, Windows 8 is at its best as a tablet OS. Which would imply that you may prefer 7 for a home computer or laptop.
penguin31
Windows 8 has resulted in more blue screens of death than any OS I've used since the abysmal Windows ME. Even with updated drivers. Even with a clean install. Complete failure. On brand new, touch-enabled hardware it's fantastic. For most other uses, 7 really is better. And it hurts to say that a little bit since as far as OS'es go I've always been a newer is better kind of guy.
Roamin Catholic
The nice thing, at least for system builders is that windows 7 is still offered for sale.
Nihil Obstat
Just call it a day and install Puppy Linux. :|
Apotheoun
I read on Zdnet that Microsoft will support Windows 7 at least until 2020. So there is apparently no reason to upgrade to something else any time soon.
arfink
Ugh, Puppy. Not really a useful day-to-day OS, more of a novelty or rescue OS. If you wanted to run Linux without hassle and with a more shallow learning curve I would heartily suggest Linux Mint with the Cinnamon GUI option. As for Windows 8, I honestly can't suggest you use it. It's not a desktop OS, it's really a tablet OS. If you are familiar with a desktop OS you will find it to be incredibly frustrating to learn and use for everyday tasks.
Nihil Obstat
Ugh, Puppy. Not really a useful day-to-day OS, more of a novelty or rescue OS. Install Puppy....... twice. :|
OnlySunshine
I got Windows 8 when I got my new laptop. Honestly, I prefer Windows 7. I had to get a "skin" for Windows 8 so I could have the Start button. Windows 8, to me, is more helpful for tablets and touch screens. Using it on a regular PC is very confusing and frustrating.
