WillT
:bravo: I thought it was funny that there was so much text in the ads-- definately a sign of a more literate culture. I looked at it and thought: tl;dr. Well, when you have servants it tends to free you up a bit for extra reading.
ContemporaryCaflicCrusader
There used to be a race at Mount Washington in the Northeast involving those pennyfarthing bikes. They started at the top and the race was to see who could make it the farthest Mt. Washington is the windiest spot on Earth. I live near there. I see cars all the time that have the bumper sticker that says "This car climbed Mt. Washington". Those are the ones that look like heck and that you would never consider buying, in fact sometimes when the fam is in the car in heavy traffic usually headed north for a day trip or more we'll spot a car with little gumption and say, "That one musta climbed Mt. Washington," only to later see the bumper sticker and all laugh. My sister climbed Mt. Washington and defied physics not breaking her leg, but my sister is a serious klutz. Ppl mountain bike it, climb it, and what not you just need to do your homework and make sure you have what you need and let ppl know where your going. here's a phone from 1895!!! http://imgur.com/tYmIWsH

dominicansoul
The Pope during the 1890s was Pope Leo XIII This is the Pope who: ---raised to the college of cardinals, John Henry Newman :) ---St. Terese of Lisieux BEGGED to allow her into the Carmelite Order ---saw the devil pounding on the altar at St. Peter's who told him that in 100 years time he would be allowed to have some "power" within the Church; in order to stop this from happening, the Pope instituted the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel prayed after every Mass ---was one of the first people ever filmed for a moving picture... AnneLine
And I had been about to say that she would have been the HEIGHT of fashion for her time. BUT... maybe it was the long days of laundry that set her over her edge. Maybe her parents asked for an extra outfit just one time too many.... There's a moral in that, something well-beloved by Victorians....
