Apotheoun
Mexican priest celebrates children's Mass in superhero robes Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No … it's SuperPriest! Catholic padre Humberto Alvarez of Saltillo, Mexico, is getting plenty of online love because of these images showing him wearing robes covered in superhero images when he celebrates children's Mass. Not many members of the clergy would sport pictures of Superman, Batman and Spidey on their holy vestments, but Alvarez clearly knows something about keeping kids' attention. The godly goofball also peps up the service by using a water gun to bless the congregation with holy water. He puts on regular robes for the adult Mass, though, and brings it back to that guy who (like Superman) died for a while but then came back. mortify
How does one structure an argument against such practices in contemporary Roman Catholicism?
Anastasia13
Look at how those kids are having fun. I bet they will grow older and look back at their church days with fondness and affection. As long as he keeps his liturgical practices in check (and has some normal vestments too), I'm not sure that is always a bad thing. As long as he keeps his liturgical practices in check (and has some normal vestments too), I'm not sure that is always a bad thing. Or else they grow up thinking church is about having fun and being nice to everyone. Then when reality hits, and they found that the Church demands serious moral effort and sacrifice, they become disillusioned and stop practicing. I have seen that many times, and I am quite young. Apotheoun
In their writings St. Theodore Studite and St. John Damascene tell us that the incarnation made the use of images in worship possible, and not merely possible, but - from a Christian viewpoint - necessary. That said, I do not think that this is what they had in mind. I have no doubt that the priest is well-intentioned, but he really is misguided. Brother Adam
Lord Jesus, have mercy on us as we offer reparation for those who would make a mockery your Holy Image in the liturgy.
4588686
Well this could make the guy wearing robes and summoning the transformation of a piece of bread into the blood and flesh of a 1st century Rabbi from an alter look kind of silly.
