FutureCarmeliteClaire
It smells of elderberries. It will always hurt. It is just that you get used to it. I had braces for years. Many years. Six or seven, I think. Maybe more. A friend of mine had his for 6 years. Three different sets, I think. Crazy stuff. Also, does anyone know what the little brushes they give you that look like Christmas trees are?
GeorgiiMichael
Yes, and if your orthodontist tells you that you could hop on a boat to Africa for 3 years and throw your retainer over the side on your way there and your teeth will still be perfect... don't listen to him. Wear your retainer. I stopped wearing mine after about a year (maybe slightly less). My teeth aren't all jacked up, but they have shifted slightly (one noticeably, but it doesn't bother me too much, that tooth was the reason for my oral surgery and how it is now is waaayyyyy better than how it was before the surgery and braces fixed it). I lost my retainer for a year or so, and when I went to put it back on, it hurt my teeth like I was back in braces again AND it never stayed in my mouth as I was sleeping (I probably took it out while sleeping, because my body is surprisingly autonomous while asleep). My teeth aren't totally junk, in fact, they're pretty good, but they aren't perfect like they were. I'm a fan of a little bit of natural...deviation in a person's smile. It adds character. Nihil Obstat
A friend of mine had his for 6 years. Three different sets, I think. Crazy stuff. Also, does anyone know what the little brushes they give you that look like Christmas trees are? Yeah. I had my wires changed out too many times to count, different tensions, the works. Practically everything except the external headgear, which most orthodontists do not use these days anyway. Those are for cleaning underneath and around the brackets, since flossing is so much harder for you now. Basically an around-braces toothpick, used in conjunction with the floss threader. I buy them for my 9 year old because she has some crooked areas where her regular toothbrush can't reach very well. (Braces in her future, too!) OnlySunshine
So, I have these wretched things in my mouth now. Just finished day 2. Still hurts like croutons to eat anything that isn't mashed potatoes, jello, and ice cream. Now, they gave me this wax stuff to put on the braces if they start poking me, so I tried, and after about 20 minutes it started getting hard and falling out. Is that normal? What if I swallow it? What if a bracket falls off and I swallow it? Will I start bleeding internally? SOMEONE HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Braces smell of elderberries. I had them for 2 years and couldn't wait to get them off. And don't worry about the brackets falling off. They are cemented to your teeth. Take plenty of Tylenol. You'll get used to the pain soon enough. At least, I did. The only time it hurt worse was when they adjust them every 6 weeks. MissScripture
My dentist told me I'll never need braces because I have perfect teeth. :spike: Yeah, I was told that, too. Now my teeth have shifted and I should have a retainer to straighten the bottom teeth, but the dentist who gave it to me was not helpful when it kept cutting my gums, so I stopped wearing it. Jacen Marx
Be careful when eating potato chips. That is the only way I ever broke one of my brackets off. True story.
ContemporaryCaflicCrusader
I have had braces on since 2010. I also happen to be an adult, and they flipping break off for eeverything. Be silly obedient and honest no matter how obnoxious it is. That way if orthodontist does accuse you of lying you can throw it in his face. That is why they are extracting 2 or 4 teeth from me coming up soon. I also have this huge fiberglass plate called a biteguard to guarantee less breakages for almost 2 years now and everyone thinks i am like 15 and I am waaaay older. You will lose weight for a little too and they are hard to clean and they're painful and gaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. They promised it'd be done in 2 years and they directly take from my bank account. on top of that there wiiiiiiiiiiiiicked expensive. I am guessing mommy and daddy are footing you're bill so thank God for that. Everyone tells me I will never regret it a day in my life. I believe that. It improves oral health and digestion and makes my teeth look less awful in general. So maybe this thread will be the I hate braces thread and we can try and hang in there together!!!!!!!!!! Is there a patron saint of teeth caregivers?! (Dentists, Orthodontists, People that just like to cause other people lots of pain and take almost all there money) I have an consult with my oral surgeon on the 25th. Fun, fun fun!!! Praying for you.
LadyOfSorrows
When I was 12, I WANTED braces because I had a gap in my two front teeth. The orthodontist refused! I actually had a little cap placed in my teeth to connect the two that had the gap. Never had any teeth problems besides that :) Although I do worry about wisdom teeth...I've seen those mess up teeth pretty terribly...
ToJesusMyHeart
Although I do worry about wisdom teeth...I've seen those mess up teeth pretty terribly... Can you elaborate please? I have my wisdom teeth still and I really don't want to have surgery if I don't have to. What will it do if you don't take them out?
AnneLine
Why do you hate me? Thanks so much guys, this was really helpful! As far as foods go, I'm seriously loving mashed potatoes. They're a food I can eat without pain, but can still taste them without having to swallow pieces whole. Tried to eat a burrito today. Big. Mistake. Tales of two friends: First one 'celebrated' getting the new braces by going out with his family for his favorite food -- chow mein with bean sprouts. Spent most of the next day getting the braces taken off and put back on -- because he had bean sprouts totally jammed in the braces. Another big mistake.... I have a friend who got braces in the 4th grade. He only just got them off. He is a freaking junior in college. Second tale is that of Mr. AnneLine -- who got his in early high school and BROUGHT CHAMPAGNE to his dentist to celebrate the removal of his braces... when he was several years OVER 21. Hopefully this will NOT happen to you! Edited March 26, 2013 by AnneLine
AnneLine
I don't know if it will work for you, Claire, but when I had a bunch of wisdom teeth taken off, my dentist suggested CHEESECAKE. Cold, sweet but not too sweet, lots of protein.... worked really well and tasted like FOOD! He also suggested pasta! Basilisa Marie
Can you elaborate please? I have my wisdom teeth still and I really don't want to have surgery if I don't have to. What will it do if you don't take them out? Most people get them out because our jaws aren't big enough to accommodate all the teeth, so the wisdom teeth get taken out. Otherwise they usually get impacted, come in crooked, push up against other teeth, etc. Or if you're like my dad, they rot and you get them taken out when you're old. :) I had all four of my out at once one summer a few years ago. They put me under and it felt like I was done in a second. I even kept my teeth because I'm a weirdo. It took me a bit longer to clot (a few days) but I know some people are ready to eat real food after day 1 (I was on a semi-liquid diet for a week). But even my weird, not normal, extra annoying experience really wasn't that bad. I taught myself to make gazpacho after refusing to eat another bowl of mashed potatoes. The vicodin kept the pain away. :) So you don't have much to worry about at all. Lucky me didn't have braces because my teeth weren't too terrible, but I had an occluso-guide for a while. Lots and lots and lots of biting exercises, four hours a day, then wearing it at night.

Spent most of the next day getting the braces taken off and put back on -- because he had bean sprouts totally jammed in the braces. Well, he got what he deserved for having a favorite food that involves bean sprouts. :| I had braces twice as a kid. Follow the allowed food list pretty closely. Also, anytime you get them adjusted (tightened) your mouth/teeth will be sore for a few days. Always good to plan ahead for those things and try to avoid scheduling it right before big events if possible.
