FutureCarmeliteClaire
So, I have these wretched things in my mouth now. Just finished day 2. Still hurts like crap to eat anything that isn't mashed potatoes, jello, and ice cream. Now, they gave me this wax stuff to put on the braces if they start poking me, so I tried, and after about 20 minutes it started getting hard and falling out. Is that normal? What if I swallow it? What if a bracket falls off and I swallow it? Will I start bleeding internally? SOMEONE HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

IcePrincessKRS
You probably won't lose a bracket. Even if you did it'd still be attached to the wire. (I did pop rubber bands once or twice, but never had a bracket come loose). The wax won't hurt you if you swallow it, but it's pretty useless since it falls off so quickly, You really have to work it to make it warmer and more pliable and then try and dry off the bracket as best as you can before applying the wax. Pain in the patooty. I had braces for almost 4 years.

IcePrincessKRS
Also: pudding. I ate it for days after every extraction and my oral surgery. lol It'll feel less sore in a day or two, probably, and with time the duration of soreness when they tighten your braces shouldn't be as long. It was over a decade ago for me but I still remember the pain of getting them tightened and my orthodontist telling me "It doesn't hurt" when I winced and thinking "Oh yeah? Let me yank your teeth around and see how YOU feel." Edited March 21, 2013 by IcePrincessKRS
Nihil Obstat
It sucks. It will always hurt. It is just that you get used to it. I had braces for years. Many years. Six or seven, I think. Maybe more They always hurt. The inside of my mouth was always cut. I stopped using the wax. It was useless and I just kept swallowing it. It would feel nice for about half an hour, then it would fall off. You will not lose the wire itself, unless somehow every single bracket simultaneously got released. It is not easy even to release a single one, so this simply will not happen. Although it may happen now and again that the entire wire will 'slide' to one side or the other, poke out on one end, and cause you no end of frustration and pain. Avoid sticky foods for that reason. It takes the dentist all of about five seconds to fix it, but it is difficult at best to do on your own. I am very sorry you have to go through this. It is not fun. Nihil Obstat
Oh, and the food that kept me from literally starving after I had my wisdom teeth out (and yes I mean literally) was scrambled eggs. Soft and fluffy, lots of good nutrients and whatnot, manageably sized pieces.

Tufsoles
I had braces on my lowers for 3 months and They said I would have them on for 3 years. LOL. The wax isn't all that great. I don't think you would die from swallowing the wax. From what I understand the wax is non toxic and in small amounts(most sitchuations that is all that is used) it won't do anything. The frist month I had my braces I came in a day early holding the wire in my hand because the wire did its job so well that it came out without the bands poping. My poor ortho was like umm.. That's different. I had striaght teeth in no time. Results not typical. the bracket won't come off their cemented on there pretty good. No you will not internally bleed even with the blood thinners. I had to eat soft foods for about a week and after that I was pretty much fine. You'll be fine and you'll be so glad when they come off.
GeorgiiMichael
I've had my braces off for about 8 years now, and this thread brought back all those old painful memories. My best advice is to avoid the foods they tell you to avoid, wear the rubber bands/headgear they tell you to wear how they tell you to wear them, and you'll be getting them off as soon as possible. If you're a big gum chewer, like I was, you can go for those sugar free gums, like Trident, without too much difficulty, but you should probably cut back. Good luck. Yes, and if your orthodontist tells you that you could hop on a boat to Africa for 3 years and throw your retainer over the side on your way there and your teeth will still be perfect... don't listen to him. Wear your retainer. I stopped wearing mine after about a year (maybe slightly less). My teeth aren't all jacked up, but they have shifted slightly (one noticeably, but it doesn't bother me too much, that tooth was the reason for my oral surgery and how it is now is waaayyyyy better than how it was before the surgery and braces fixed it). Lilllabettt
i had braces for 4 years . it was worth it. i had a random check up with some dentist in alabama - i opened my mouth and he began raving about my bite, wanting to know who did my work, making his staff come marvel. So, analysis: braces. Painful, my parents mortgaged their house, but my teeth are a freaking masterpiece and to quote metallica, nothing else matters. FutureCarmeliteClaire
My dentist told me I'll never need braces because I have perfect teeth. :spike: Why do you hate me? Thanks so much guys, this was really helpful! As far as foods go, I'm seriously loving mashed potatoes. They're a food I can eat without pain, but can still taste them without having to swallow pieces whole. Tried to eat a burrito today. Big. Mistake.
