the171
Now socks. Ok. What are some lightweight socks that are thin, but still serve their purpose? I have some, but they wear out so quickly.
the171
Can't edit, but never mind about the socks. Just ran in the shoes with normal socks. I thought they would be too tight. Perfect.

Slappo
When you guys talk about running... how far are you talking? I have probably a $30 pair of shoes I use when working out since the gym requires specific indoor shoes to avoid floor and equipment damage. I eliptical or run some (eliptical machine says 3.5 mile distance but I don't buy that, most 2mi on treadmill prob) and I lift. I'm not thinking for the amount of running I do that it would be worth the investment. Not looking to even do something like a 5k. Thoughts? the171
I used to do 5m, but I'm just starting back up. Did 2m today.

The important thing is to have a shoe that fits well - the advantage of going to a running shop is they will help you find what fits well, and tell you if you have any issues with your stride that need to be accounted for in your shoes. If what you're doing seems to work, I wouldn't worry. :P

For me, I'm training for triathlons (which have varying running distances), 5k's, 10k's, and eventually working myself up. But even if you aren't planning to do that much running, I would still recommend you get a good pair of shoes from a running shop. It will help reduce the chance of injury by a lot. When I first started, I got injured by using shoes that weren't good for my feet and the amount of running I was doing. Paying more for a pair of really good shoes can help save money when I comes to doctor's visits for injury. I learned that the hard way.

And unless the shoes were on a super cheap sale, I am guessing you will quickly be able to tell the difference between a cheap pair of shoes and an expensive pair. I had briefly tried to go the cheap route in college, and would supplement with inserts. When I finally bought a good pair, I was amazed by the difference. I hadn't gotten any injuries wearing the cheap shoes, but my feet and knees and back felt so much better in the good shoes.
the171
It might have been the excitement and confidence I get from a new pair of shoes, (I think the shoes themselves had something to do with it) but I ran with less pain today. I did have an issue with one of my ankles at one point and my knee at another point, but I'm pretty sure that leg has always held me back a little. Weak knee and ankle.
