socalscout
Let us assume that we are fully aware of the evils of putting material items before God and the 1st Commandment and we fully intend to obey God. With that said is it wrong to ask God for a better job? More money? More fulfilling career? Your take?

Slappo
No. Although you need to do more than pray. Yes exactly this. Pray for a more fulfilling job, one that supports your family better, etc., but also get off your butt and: 1. Look 2. Spice up your qualifications (college, technical certificates, advanced trainings, etc) 3. Apply If you have to, research interviewing tips, application tips, look at job markets in other cities. It may take a lot of effort.
Slappo
My wife and I often include financial success in our prayers. Financial success is healthy as long as you are serving God and not mammon.
Lil Red
I don't think it's wrong. But I also think it's important not to get too disappointed because things don't work out the way you want them to. In all things, God's will be done. (and I agree with Hasan above)
Didacus
You can always ask - wether or not He will give you what you ask is another question all together.
Tufsoles
I think of it this way. We do need to pray but be like St. Joesph and keep our minds busy with work. Do something fulfilling with your life and pray for financial success, in order to provide for our basic needs(I.e. Food, water, shelter, basic clothing). Like Slappo said as long as it is for the service of God.
mortify
Well brother you either choose to live in this world or outside of it. If your call is to live in this world and raise a family, you must entertain some level of worldliness. The more capital we generate the better we can steer this society. So engage in your work, excell in it, and try to make as much as you can.
socalscout
Agreed with all, thank you. At what point do you think that asking becomes greed or avarice? Can Bill Gates ask for a more fulfilling career without sounding like a tool to God? Here is an analogy about my son and it is a true story. This past season he was the starting offensive left guard for his middle school team and played every down of every game the entire season. There was one wrinkle, he wanted to be a defensive line backer and during practice he trained as one in addition to left guard so he is a good line backer. One day in the fourth quarter of a game they were winning by a land side, the coach asked who had not had a chance to play defense and my son raised his hand. The coach told him to put his hand down. He came to me and said why did coach say that? I told him there were other boys who probably have not gotten to even play at all during the season and you are a starter who never comes out of the game on offense. Be happy about being a starter even if it is not the position you want right now. We'll try for linebacker next season. I'm not a starter by a long shot right now but I am on the team and in the game, should I raise my hand? BTW here is a shamless plug for my son. He is a stud. http://youtu.be/ugM7GUC_UUc :smile4:
