Evangetholic
With all eyes on Rome and the installation of Pope Francis, American Catholics are having a political moment of their own. Six of nine Supreme Court justices are Catholic, as is Vice President Joe Biden, Rep. Paul Ryan who ran last year to replace him and 162 other members of Congress, an all-time high. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/03/19/america-s-catholic-moment-and-its-new-breed-of-catholic-politicians.html

Socrates
A) Didn't read it. B) Think "that Dorothy Day crowd" are a bunch of heretics/modernists/imbeciles/"Nancies" A) Maybe you didn't read it, but I did, unfortunately. (Though in retrospect, I suppose the words "The Daily Beast" and "National Catholic Reporter" should have told me all I needed to know.) B) Don't know about "that Dorothy Day crowd," but that would describe most of the "Catholics" in Congress. I admit I'm not an expert on Dorothy Day's thought, but I've been informed she was a kind of anarchist/volunteerist, which means she would have been no fan of the type of big-gov coercive statism embraced by the author and the Democrats. The author of the piece confuses "communitarianism" (aka welfare-state socialism) with Catholicism. It may be that in a generation, the two parties will sort out their ideologies, with one party standing for libertarian impulses across the board and the other adopting a more communitarian approach. If that happens, the communitarian party might be the Democrats or it might be the Republicans, but either way, it would be a decidedly Catholic Party. Denouncing Republicans such as Ryan as being somehow un-Catholic for supporting even the most modest scalebacks in projected government growth and spending is complete nonsense, and if Mr. Winters actually .believes his own bs here, he is indeed an idiot. (If only Ryan and the Republicans were in fact serious about cutting back on Leviathon government, as opposed to just slightly slowing its runaway growth!) (Waits for Winchester to come in, blast Ryan as an Evil Statist, then proceed to beat you with a large stick . . . )
