Tips For Weight Loss

I've slowly been changing my diet and adding healthy habits. Most recently I did a more radical alter. I now exercise 4-5 times a week and have changed my weekday breakfast and lunch to a fruit and vegetable smoothie. I either add protein powder to the smoothie or a powder called breakfast essentials.

Overall I've only lost maybe 4lbs in 2 months, but weight loss isn't my focus. A healthier lifestyle is my focus. I'd love to drop 15lbs overall, but I'm in no rush. Right now my exercise is strictly cardio, but as soon as I have an oomph of motivation to get to the gym a little earlier, I'll add some free weights as well. I need to build up some muscle so I can carry a deer on my back over a 2-3 mile hike in the woods during hunting season :).

I disagree with another posters comment that weight lifting is the best way to lose weight. Weight lifting is one of the best ways to lose fat, but not necessarily weight as the muscle you gain is more dense than the fat you lose.

From what I have understood from trainers is that to lose fat in isolated areas like calves, thighs, arms, stomach, etc. Is to lose general wait (via cardio for instance), then work with weights and other toning based exercises specific to the isolated regions. We need to lose weight and fat through exercise and healthy eating, but we need to tone limbs/abs by building and strengthening the muscles in isolated regions to make tight what was once 'wobbly'. I forget who said it, some TV trainers I believe, you can do as many sit-ups as you like, but if you don't change your eating and add cardio workouts, no one will see the muscles beneath an existing layer of fat <-- this has come up in numerous sources.

Also I asked a friend who is studying nutrition in university, diets that cut out things like dairy or gluten are only beneficial to those who have allergies/intolerance to them. Any diet that has you paying attention to what you are eating will generate weight loss, but there is no reason to eliminate healthy food for weight loss regions;  you will only be depriving yourself of nutrients without reason. Pay attention to calories (usually a doctor can advice you on what amount you need for weight loss, maintenance, and what amount will cause weight gain), drink plenty of water, sleep well, and be active.

I've been trying to lose weight for awhile now. My body is opposed to the idea of a diet. Every time I tell my body that we are going to diet it tells me, "that's what you think chubby" and then sends visions of french fries into my head. Sigh, I have no willpower.

You could try modifying what you think of as fries. Instead of deep fried in fat, you could sprinkle them with spices and a little olive oil and throw them in the oven (or on a grill) and then your fry crazing is satisfied but in a healthier way. Buy lean ground beef and make your burgers on a grill or some other method where the fat is drained more thouroughly (not that there's no fat,  but it less than sitting in grease at McDonalds.). make "salads" )chicken, egg, etc) with plain yogurt (or even lowfat sour cream) instead of mayo (which is just gross anyway). :|

If you just switch to eating real food instead of stuff that's easy, cheap and convienient (I suck at this, personally) And look at labels. Products that are marketed for weight loss, especially put things in there that are questionable at best and potentially poisonous (no sugar, so they use aspertame, etc), It's really not so much about "saying no" as it is finding a different way. (ok. there are some things we should definitely say no to, like poptarts.  those things have as many calories as an entire meal and sugars galore. I make my own, actually lol.) But if we just think of it as "no! FORBIDDEN!" it's a lot harder than saying "how can I make this better for me?"

You don't need to exercise to lose weight. My dad was overweight for years and has recently lost 20 kilos just by changing his diet - no exercise involved.

Eat breakfast. Drink plenty of water. Eat salads and a good variety of vegetables. The most important thing is to be balanced in your dietary intake. You can eat anything, really - just know your body's limits and don't consume more energy than you'll end up using.

My biggest thing I've learnt in my ongoing weight loss is that I have to let myself misbehave occasionally. In moderation, I allow myself a little bit of the naughty foods I like most - it stops me from building up a craving and going on a binge (I have no willpower :P )

Well this is the first time I've attempted to lose weight and been successful. I'm past the halfway point too and it's been slow and steady. They say its healthy to lose 1-2lbs per week and 1lb = 3500 calories. I've been modifying my diet and exercise for a little over 2 months so I'm very happy with 13.5 lbs not to mention I don't think I've been this weight since high school. I also have to mention that once you lose a bit of weight and can see and feel a difference, you become increasingly motivated to keep going :)
