I Propose A New Papal Honorific

Era Might

Instead of "Francis the Great"..."Francis the Humble"

Wouldn't the granting of a new "honorific title" be indicative of a lack of humility? A truly humble man does not need honorific titles.

I don't think honor is necessarily opposed to humility. Depends on the nature and context of the honor.

Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Being honorable is certainly not contrary to humility. But honorific titles seem vacuous to me. I really doubt that Pope Francis is all that interested in new honorific titles. Besides, the pope has more than enough such titles already, and really does not need any new ones.

Of course, one does not bestow an honor on one's self. Hence, my proposition. And "the humble" would be a post-mortem title...to my knowledge, "the Great" is the only Papal post-mortem honorific.

I think it is best to wait until he is dead to give him a personal honorific. That's how the Church has done it in the past, and I see no reason to change the practice.

Yeah, let's wait till he is dead. For one thing we may discover that he is not all that humble (I am not saying this to imply he is a phony or anything like that, but only that so long as he lives he can change), so it is best to wait in connection with such things.

Well of course, the thread isn't meant to be serious.

Sorry about that. Had this been posted in the Lame Board I would have known you were not serious, but in Open Mic I took it as a statement of serious intent. My apologies.
