I was in another co-worker's office talking about travel related accounting work when her phone went off with a breaking news update. She apologized, explained the app for a second and then read the news article out loud in a "who cares about this?!" manner. I kept my calm, but on the inside I was like "White smoke from Rome?!?!?!?!!!!! WOOOOOO!!"

Shortly thereafter I returned to my office and lisnted in on ave maria radio from my smart phone.

Nihil Obstat

I was at the mall, buying a suit. When the white smoke came out I was just on the way out the door, so I was glued to my phone the entire time I was at the mall.

At first I could not remember, between Bergoglio and Bagnasco, who was who. Had to do a bit of searching to remember.

I was coloring a map in history class when my teacher said in a who really cares voice "White Smoke." I jumped out of my seat and my classmates where so suprised I had to explain (even though our religion teacher had just talked about the smoke color and everything two days ago at the most).  I told my history teacher to put it up on the projector, but he couldn't find any live feed until I came over and got onto Phatmass. (dUSt thanks :) .)  IDK what I was doing when Pope Benedict was elected but I was 5 :child:

I was at my sister's house, and Fox News said they were expecting smoke any minute. We left for home (Which is thirty minutes away) and halfway there my sister called, saying there was white smoke. I don't know why, but I was totally expecting there to be white smoke. I went home and went into the TV room, and watched Fox News religiously as I waited for the Pope to be announced and then speak to the people. I got so excited when I saw people walking behind the curtains, and when they finally opened them up and came out. I couldn't understand a word he said, but when he said "Pope Francis", I started jumping up and down with excitement. I was a little disappointed it wasn't Burke, but I already love Pope Francis to death and I still get really excited when talking about him.

I was in my room when the white smoke was seen.  When the pope came out onto the balcony I was in Spiritual direction. Once he started speaking I had to leave to go to my English class. :P

I was watching local news, just finishing painting a 1.5 foot diameter medallion ( now my avatar) that will be used in decorating the front of my Church for the Sunday Liturgy. Then I ran over to the Church between the smoke and the announcement, celebrated briefly in anticipation, prayed briefly before the abernacle, then ran home in time for Pope Francis to be announced.

I feel old. :|

I was watching EWTN and posting in the "Conclave" thread. I didn't know there was a chat function here. Maybe next time? :)

I was at work at the newspaper when my coworker said "Oh hey, I just got a notification that there's white smoke."

I tried to keep most of the happy from gushing out of me like a volcano while our managing editor turned on the TV.

Big events like this will bring a newsroom to a standstill, so everyone gathered around the TV while we waited for news. Lots of people made jokes and placed bets.

I was on the phone with Brian the whole time, with EWTN's live stream on my computer.

My first reaction was "Francisco? Bergolio? Who's that?????" He was one of the papabile I didn't familiarize myself with, so I was really surprised.

I was actually eating dinner with the priest that lives in my residence discussing the different papal candidates and such, we had basically decided nothing would happen until tomorrow and we didn't know who would be picked... when I got back to my room I went on facebook (and this is TRUE, btw), and first saw a post from Hasan of all people saying there was a new pope and it hadn't been him (yes, just like all of you, I was deeply disappointed he hadn't been picked).  I actually wasn't sure whether to believe him that a pope had actually been chosen, lol, so I typed in Pope to google (btw Pope Alert didn't send me an email, I even checked my spam, bah) and found out there had indeed been white smoke.

so I started streaming to watch.  the Vatican.va stream kept stalling so I went into the phatmass chatroom to get the EWTN stream (and didn't say a word to anyone in chat lol, I wonder if they tried to say hello to me, I just put it on full screen)...  I thought I was so clever, I thought I'd recognize every latin name of all the likely cardinals.  Bergoglio was not on my radar at all, so I was sad I didn't know who it was just by the announcement as I had last time.

my first thoughts on seeing him was that he looked like a classic Italian pope, and that hey! he's not wearing a mozzetta!

his address was quite edifying, though :cyclops:

The audio wasn't great on my end when they announced the name, so all I got was the Latin of "George" and then "Francis" so I immediately thought of Cardinal George of Chicago. Then they announced "Jorge" and it all made sense again!
