MIKolbe
I was at a tradeshow, tearing down my booth and product to load up and leave. Shea texted me to say there is white smoke. I downloaded the EWTN app after trying to find some streaming from google. Got a really good feed from EWTN, and as they were announcing him, Shea texted me everything. Like 15 texts in 1 minute. This made the app and the feed go crazy. First, it was choppy. Then, it sped up and looked like those 'old time' movies. It was rather comical. Somebody taking real fast, then a camera pan to people clapping all fast like, waving flags in double speed.... then i went back and read the texts. Maybe God knows I like a good joke, so He likes to play them on me?
franciscanheart
I had a feeling we'd be seeing smoke, so I was watching a chimney cam. I'd been watching for about an hour and a half (listening to commentary ((about how we'd not likely see smoke, actually)) while working on some print jobs) when I heard someone say the bells were ringing. I knew the smoke was only moments away. And then, THERE IT WAS. :nun2:
Lil Red
I was watching the NBC live stream because my local noon news was on, then after the news was over, NBC switched to the feed on the tv. i was shouting with excitement in my living room :)
Basilisa Marie
When Benedict was elected I was in my history class when my English teacher walked in and bellowed "HABEMUS PAPEM!" I went to a public school. People were confused. :hehe2: This time I had just gotten out of the shower, finishing up some Christianity and Economics reading in one window and tabbed over to the livefeed of the chimney and saw the billowing smoke. I flailed a bit and then proceeded to ignore the homework assignment I was supposed to be reading for. My professor then emailed all of us and said that due to the fact that all of us had probably spent the last two hours waiting for the papal blessing, she was extending the deadline to this morning at noon. :)

BigJon16
All afternoon, I had been watching a live feed of the chimney from my iphone at school. I was getting break fluid for my Suburban when I got the text from Pope Alarm saying "white smoke." I was at home watching NBC and on Phatmass for the announcement. They had a pretty awesome lineup of commentators: Fr. Robert Barron, George Weigel, and Cardinal Egan. And then I danced for joy and cried of love for the Church. mcts
I was fixing my fiance lunch and a friend texted me. I immediately turned on the television and texted practically everyone I know. Luckily, G was able to stay home until Papa Francis came out so we were able to watch everything together.

IgnatiusofLoyola
Even heretics (namely myself) were watching the seagull cam, uh, smoke cam. I love animals so I was fascinated by the seagull. It was as if it said, "Hey, this chimney is new, check it out!" First the seagull smelled the opening where the smoke would come out, then proceeded to thoroughly groom itself. (Animal factoid: Animals don't generally groom themselves unless they are feeling safe and comfortable.) When the seagull flew away, I left to perform my daily medical procedures on my elderly cat. When I came back, I found had missed the white smoke by about 5 minutes!!!! Arggh Story of my life. However, from then on, I stayed glued to the Internet feed. It was very moving and I even shed a few tears. (Okay, I cry easily.) My first reaction to Pope Francis I is that I like him. He seems genuinely humble, yet he also managed to come across in his first words as warm, intelligent, articulate, and genuinely caring. I liked the fact that before he blessed the people he asked for their prayers. And, I've been part of Phatmass long enough to know that it was a real plus (and a sign of his traditional values) that he did NOT ask the people to put out their hands to bless him! I also noticed that Pope Francis addressed his first words not only to Catholics, but also to "people of goodwill." (That's me.) However, I am still waiting for a definitive answer as to which saint the new Pope named himself after. The secular media seem to assume that he named himself in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, because of the new Pope's concern for the poor. However, I also thought that, being a Jesuit, his name might have been inspired by St. Francis of Xavier, co-founder of the Jesuits. Or maybe it was both--that would be good, too. I am just glad he didn't name himself "Pope Ignatius." That would have played havoc with my screen name. It's tough enough that people who aren't familiar with me think I'm male. (I'm not--I am proudly female.) But, new people might have thought I took my name from the Pope, something I would never be arrogant enough to do. (For those who don't know me, my screen name was chosen because my birthday is the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola.) I have also discovered in the past couple of years that my spirituality is primarily Ignatian, with a strong streak of Dominican. I was born several days early, so I like to think that my "fetal self" chose to be born on St. Ignatius' feast day.
