homeschoolmom
What were you doing when you heard about the new pope? While all of the smoke/announcements were going on, I was taking my mother to the grocery store-- completely cut off from the news. <sigh> Around 3:00, I was at my daughter's school on other business when she said, "But hey-- we have a new pope!" WHAT??? Then about five people started excitedly shouting details at me....

Evangetholic
I was here (on PM). I went into the chat after my grandmother called me and watched on EWTN. Google had to tell me who exactly the new Holy Father was. :)
EmilyAnn
I spent all day watching the chimney for the smoke. I'd gone to the store for a few minutes (it's only down the road) and I got back right as the white smoke appeared.
ToJesusMyHeart
I was praying at the shrine of our Lady of Walsingham, with my roommate. Just finished noon mass. A lady we didn't know came running up to us, frantically screaming in a Hispanic accent, "WHITE SMOKE! WHITE SMOKE! WHITE SMOKE!" Took us a minute to realize what she was implying, and then we started jumping, holding hands, screaming, "HABEMUS PAPAM!" And proceeded to run to this unknown Hispanic woman's iPad to get the Live stream. :)

OnlySunshine
I was eating lunch at Sweet Tomatoes with my grandmother. Before we left, I registered with popealarm to receive a text message when white smoke had been seen. I almost turned around and went back home right after we left but I was convinced it wouldn't occur until today. Right as we were leaving the restaurant, I pulled out my cell phone because I sometimes don't hear the message alert. Imagine my surprise when I saw there was a new message! I opened it up and saw "White smoke!" I told my grandmother (a non-Catholic) and she was going to go to the bookstore in the mall. I immediately called my mom on the way to the mall since she is out of town and let her know we have a new Papa! She was so excited and I told her to try to find a TV because they will be announcing his identity soon. I was listening to the radio on the way to the mall, as well. I remembered there is a TV right outside the bookstore so I high-tailed it to see if the news was on and they had it tuned to CNN. I sat there for 45 minutes and watched as the lights in the room behind the balcony flickered on and Cardinal Tauran announced "Habemus Papam!" and then the closed captions said the Cardinal elected was Cardinal Bergoglio. I thought, "Who is that?" I'd never heard of his name before. They announced he was from Buenos Aires, Argentina and I thought, "Wow, a South American Pope!" I watched and waited for 10 more minutes. Next thing I knew, they opened the scarlet curtain and revealed Pope Francis! I have to say that I was in love with his new name from the first moment I heard it. When Pope Francis stepped out on to the balcony, my first thought was, "He's so tiny! He's a pocket pope!" He looked so humble and, quite frankly, a little scared (who wouldn't be?). I watched for another 5 minutes and then REALLY had to go to the bathroom so I got up. As I was walking to the bathroom in the department store, I called my mom again and asked if she was able to watch the news. She had and we reveled in the news of a new pope! It was a fantastic day and I had a great big smile on my face! :woot:
To Jesus Through Mary
I was at work (at a parish) and one of the priest came up behind me "there is white smoke" we all freak out and spent the next hour glued to the tv. And my pastor (from Argintina) was so excited. What an electric and heartwarming moment!!
Brother Adam
When Ratzinger was elected pope I was in a classroom at Steubenville with a bunch of students and professors. When Francis was elected I was sitting in my office after getting out of a long meeting (where none of us were paying any attention as we were checking out phones for news). Just as I turned on the live feed white smoke started billowing out. I got to watch for the next hour with our Catholic school kids and parents. Pretty cool. I was in Dr. Hildebrand's Christology class when Pope Benedict was elected. The whole class was stunned when Cardinal Ratzinger's name was announced.
