why did he not just keep the amesome name he already have? I would never want to change my name. I have an amesome name.

Probably because Bergoglio sounds almost as ridiculous as Wojtyla.

im watching that too

He (Fr. Mitch Pacwa) also said that he wasn't sure which St. Francis he is named after, but he thought it was probably a bit of both St. Francis of Assisi and St. Francis de Sales.

I can't believe St. Francis Desales has been completely ruled out

Because the Vatican spokesperson says so.

"The new pope took the name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi because he is a lover of the poor, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Tom Rosica told CNN.

OKAY, NOW I WILL BE EXCITED FULLY AND COMPLETELY:

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi has confirmed that the name refers to St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan order, often seen as the Jesuits' traditional rivals.

Wow. This is so completely. expected. I just want to take this moment to stick it to all the Francis Xavier proponents out there.

In all seriousness, it makes total sense it was after Saint Francis of Assisi. The reason is because everyone automatically thinks of him when you say "Saint Francis". If the Pope was going for Xavier, he would have named himself Pope Xavier, not Pope Francis. Saint Xavier is known as Saint Xavier, and less so as Saint Francis Xavier.

My lectures are free, and I give them by request or simply my own charity. ;)

I have a room I could clean, yes. Instead I'll plan to and then procrastinate cleaning it until the end of the day. :P

Nihil Obstat

Actually I do not recall ever having heard St. Francis Xavier being referred to simply as St. Xavier.

Xavier University. And the high school in Louisville is usually called just St. X.
