dairygirl4u2c
wouldn't you expect a Franciscan to pick Francis? maybe a Jesuit picks the founder or something more related to that order? how do popes generally pick names.... just preference for the person or popes named after or? EmilyAnn
Why can't a Jesuit like St. Francis? I am a Benedictine by nature, but St. Francis is one of my favourite saints.

PhuturePriest
I think he went after Saint Francis of Assisi. Just because he's a Jesuit it doesn't mean he named himself after Xavier. Saint Francis was humble and rebuilt the Church. Pope Francis I is known for great humility, and obviously we can assume rebuilding the Church is on his agenda. Oremoose
Well yes, but still... As a co-founder of the Jesuits it is extremely acceptable to chose Francis, We cannot assume Francis means Francis of Assisi, It could be Francis of Rome! I know I am quick to Jump at the reason for the name but till we know for sure we both are assuming too much... I think that we need not to look to the past but push forward and have a strong push on missions, St. Xavier is known for that (and is revered in meany Hispanic countries so it may also be a sign of a shout out to the countries of his roots). As the Church is the body of Christ I have all faith that it shall be repaired in its needed areas, but we need to remember that the word still needs to be spread and all I see really being spread is the medias "spin" on what Catholics should be not what we are. And that could turn people away from the church and we should not let that happen.

Slappo
I hope that Pope Francis I revitalizes the fidelity of the Jesuits. I have heard that the younger crowd of Jesuits are very very faithful to the Church whereas some of the older crowd not so much (hence jokes like, "What's the only thing that doesn't change at a Jesuit mass? The wine and bread").

Oremoose
As Father John, SCJ (@ padrejoaozinho) put it: Quote That the new pope has the humility of Francis of Assisi, the missionary zeal of Francis Xavier and mystique copy of Francisco de Paula.
