mortify
I viewed an excerpt from the 1938 film, Alexander Nevsky, a film portraying the struggle of the Sons of Rus against the Teutonic Order and it sparked some reflection within me. Being a descendent of Lech, I understand the struggle against the Germanic horde. The Teutonic Knights were crusaders whose military operations were in Europe (that crusades occured in Europe is oft forgotten.) Under the pretext of spreading Catholicism they would invade and plunder foriegn lands. It was what I would call a materialization of our religion, turning it into a worldly power that sought domination over others. It transformed the Spiritual Authority into a temporal power, which ought to have been the upper most part of the Church vested with governance, it now became something over and above it seeking it's own benefit. There were many instances where the Vatican interfered and even subverted my own country, at times even siding with schismatics and Protestants! To all the Catholics suffering with nostalgia, I must say the ceasing of the Papal States and the return of the Papacy to a Spiritual Authority is a very good thing! Oh and btw, great film! 4588686
That was a good movie. Stalin commissioned it, then banned it after the non-aggression pact, the promoted it again. Eisenstein ftw.
