Era Might
Yeah, this is not just a rumour. It is starting Tuesday. By Sunday, almost for sure, we will have a new pope. Didn't they change the rules so you have to have 2/3 rather than a simple majority? Could drag it on longer.
Nihil Obstat
Didn't they change the rules so you have to have 2/3 rather than a simple majority? Could drag it on longer. That was the somewhat older rule that was changed by John Paul II.
Era Might
That was the somewhat older rule that was changed by John Paul II. oic. I thought I read something in an article recently that Benedict changed it so that it never resorts to a simple majority (I think it said previously it would go to simple majority if it drags on). I may have misunderstood though.

I may have misunderstood though. From what I understand, the rule as it stood for some time (I do not know how long) was 2/3 majority, which John Paul II changed to simple majority. Benedict was elected by simple majority, and changed the rule back to 2/3 majority. I think the 2/3 majority rule does include a provision for simple majority after x number of ballots with no clear winner.
MissScripture
What would happen if a Cardinal who was eligible for voting when a conclave began had a birthday during the conclave and was then too old? Would he have to stop voting, or would he still be allowed, since he was eligible at the start?

Gabriela
I'm pretty sure the rule states "at the opening of the conclave". Nope. I was wrong: It's under 80 on the date of the Sede Vacante.
